Everyone, I have a 99 D2 with 60k on it and I am experiencing clunks and knocks from the driveline during stop and go traffic. The dealer is telling me this is due to normal wear of the various driveline components and I shouldn't worry about it. They said relative to other Discoveries they've seen come into the shop my driveline is tighter than average. Is the dealer shooting me a line or is this really the case? |

Craig, You might want to check your Rotoflex, that could be the problem. If you don't know what that is, it is a rubber coupling on the rear driveshaft in front of the rear axle. That wears down after a while. Other than that there is always a normal clunk noise on a D2. I have a 2000 D2 (38K) and it makes a clunk noise. But it sounds like its the Rotoflex for you, after 60K you hsould chnage it and sooner if you off-road more often. |

Why did LR switch back to the rotoflex on D2's when they had already been fitting non-rotoflex driveshifts to later model D1's? Does the rotoflex have an advantage over a standard u-joint design as it applies to the D2? |

IMO, the rotoflex is a cheap alternative and not as flexible (no pun intended) or reliable as a ujoint might be for suspension mods or general long-term use. BTW, I just had my whole drivetrain apart and you really notice the slack at each point: hub-diff-pinion (f/r), tcase i/o, locked and unlocked. It's fun playing with a tcase while it's just sitting on the floor. I couldn't believe all the play throughout, had me a little worried, but when we got it all stabbed up and squared away, that baby was tight, no more clonks when shifting from park or when accelerating after releasing the throttle. Still get that typical D2 (D1?) clonk when starting from a dead stop however. |

I changed all of my driveline fluids this weekend on my D2. Everything looked fine except for the front diff. The fluid came out grayish/silver and the magnetic drain plug had about a half inch of sludge and metal particals on top of it. I've noticed the knocks and clunks I am experiencing seem to be more from the front of the vehicle. Time for a front diff rebuild? The D2 axles are a bit different than the ones found on a D1. I am a little unsure how you get the left and right axles shafts disengaged from the diff so you can pull it off the axle. Help! |
