Q-HELP - I'm trying to install the heated seat switches in a 2002 Discovery - Westminister edition and I can't figure out how to remove the gear selector knob from the post. I need to remove the knob in order to free-up the gear selector indicator, due to the fact that the whole center counsel is one solid piece "Westminister edition" from the cigerette lighter - back to the window switches. Is it press fit, and if so - any ideas on getting it off. There aren't any visible set screws etc..
ThX - Scott

Hi Scott
It just unscrews counter clockwise, might be a bit tight though!
You will probably need to unclip the gaiter first, this is located on four plastic clips, one in each corner, and they can break, be careful.
Best of luck.

If you are refering to the Automatic shifter, it is a bitch, you have to pull hard as hell.

read the directions at EE, they are for installing CDL in a DII, but they will show you how to remove the center console.

Michael,
Very likely is a faulty brake-switch, that would need to be replaced.

BLUE! You did this recently, any pointers?

Bette,

This happened to me about 2 months ago. It is the brake switch which failed. It tells the shifter that you have the brake on and allows you to release it from park. Check to see if you still have brake lights working. This is a dead give away for this problem. Because I too was stuck away from any Rover parts dealers, I called a towing company that was familiar with the Rover. They came and "hot wired" the brake switch temporarily to get it out of park. I then drove home and used the foglight switch whenever I used the brake, since they were not working as described earlier to alert drivers behind me. When I got home, I didn't shift into park but used the parking brake with the Rover in neutral or it WILL get stuck again. Then I went and had a new switch put in and it is now fully driveable once again. Hope that helps.

Mine went bad a few weeks back. The brake switch from Nathan at Roverconnection is about 25.00 and very easy to change. To get mine out of park when I was stranded, I just stabbed the brake pedal hard a few times and it released. Give it a try if your stuck but get the replacement switch or you'll be stuck again.

Scott, place it in "D" and just pull up VERY hard. Caution...Don't lean over the knob while you're doing this. Loss of teeth may result.

You have to pull really hard, but it will come off.

I second the caution.."Don't lean over the knob while you're doing this. " I cut my lip against a tooth while doing this.

But yes, it does come off with a hard pull.

Bette,
If you think it may be brake light switch, you can look under the brake pedal- pull white button/switch out gently. At this point you should be able to get it out of park and limp home. CAUTION...Brake lights will NOT work so be careful and park it untile switch is replaced. Discovered this after being stuck in McD's drive-through. Good Luck.

To,
Leslie,James,John,and Kevin,
Thank you all very much ,for your extremely speedy
advice.Unfortunately even after 15 minutes of deperate brake pedal jabbing, the shifter would still not budge, plus the brake lights were working fine.!!!It was only after the Triple A tow-truck driver arrived and had the sense to uncouple the cable, connecting the shifter to the
"Whathaveyou",that we were able to push the car,
or as I like to call it "That piece of S##T" on to the back of the tow-truck.Suffice it to say ,that had this happened off-road or God forbid in East LA,I would have been well "F#####",and despite all the praise for Land Rover vehicles, this failing in the design of the Discovery, was one Discovery too much...!
So lad's please keep up the good work,
Many thanks,
Michael (The ex-Discovery Owner)

Michael,

With the engine on, depress the brake and listen closely to the console area and see if you can hear a clicking noise.

There is an actuator in the shifter that has to slide out of place to allow the vehicle to shift out of park. This actuator needs two signals to work, One from the brake pedal, the other is sent by a roller micro-switch in the shifter assemble that tells the vehicle that you are actually in park.

What tends to happen is that the armature on the microswitch will break off or bend out of place.

If you don't hear the clicking, you can probably bet it's the micro-switch.

Remove the center console, and remove teh shift lever assemble.

The Micro-switch is located (if sitting in the drivers seat) in the lower right hand corner of the shifter box, on the top side. If you look close, you van see the condition of the switch. The switch has a little roller.

Stick your finger in there and pull up on the switch and then step on the brake (Engine running),you should hear the actuator engage/disengage everytime you hit the pedal.

L/R wants $75+ for the switch assemble. Radio Shack has the part for $2.75.

Let me know what you find and I'll walk you through replacing the switch.

Mike Cox
