Quick question about a noise that appears when it is warm outside. Sounds like a fan or motor turning of some sort. Noise comes from under the passenger's side rear door near the tire. I thought that it was the aux radiator fan, but low & behold it's not. I'm sure that it is not something wrong...but it is quite a loud "ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ" you can hear it inside the vehicle even when the radio is low. Turns on for about a minute then goes away. thanks again guys. jb |

No, air is off. It is coming from underneath the vehicle. |

So I am out with my 1st-wife-to-be last night & we stop at a light in a quiet part of Denver. It is a nice night out so the windows are down & the radio is off bc we are discussing the boycott of France and the noise kicks in. "ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ" Sounds like some robotic arm underneath the truck. She asks me wha the sound is and I tell her a pump. What a blow to my ego you know. So today I am going to crawl underneath and isolate it. The assembly-plant worker came out of the frame in 2001. We had a few Guinnesses & rode some trails. He has been sitting in my back seat ever since rattling the hell out of them every time I go over a bump. I'll let ya'll know if I find something. JB |

Does your truck have ACE or SLS? Both systems make strange sounds on my rig. |

ACE - "Active Cornering Enhancement" - It's a hydraulic sway bar system. Most trucks with this system have 18" wheels. You can see four pipes in the right front wheel well. This system ticks, chatters and occasionally groans under load. SLS - "Self Leveing Suspension" - Air Bags, rather that springs in the rear. This system comes in most truck with rear jump seats. You would also have a button on the dash to increase the height of the rear to help with loads are deparure angle on the trail. You can hear this system "woosh" occasionally as it levels itself out. -John |

I'd agree w/ the fuel pump theory, especially after the "robot arm" comment. Mine sounds exactly like that when I first turn the key over to Aux (before starting the truck). I haven't noticed it once I'm driving, though. -Lawrence |

Could this be a symptom that its about to fail. The pump that is... I second Tilly that mine buzz's at first startup but kinda quiet like. Maybe yours is on the fritz. Hmm.. |

Ok it is definitely the fuel pump making the noise. But why when I'm driving?? Is there a bad sensor or something associated w/ this? It is crazy. Also the pump sounds like it is ailing & unhealthy. I haven't noticed any problems with the truck except for the stumbing idle when it is hot outside. HHMMMM...fuel pump acting up when it is hot....idle stumbling when it is hot. I may be onto something here. Any suggestions?? Anyone??? |

Do you have high mileage vehicle older D1? It wouldn't surprise me if pump is going bad if the above is true. I don't have a disco (I have '89 RRC) but does the disco have a relay pump inside the tank that runs fuel to the main fuel pump? If so, the relay pump may be bad and causing strain on main fuel pump causing symptoms you describe as well. |

My D1 is a 96 w/ 70k. I haven't had any problems w/ the pump except for the noise. The strange thing is that the noise appears when it is warm outside. Weird huh? |

When did you last replace the fuel filter? If not in the last 30K - do it now. Dirty filters will cause the pump to work too hard and will eventually burn it up. Bill |

And/or melt the harness connector at the pump module. |
