I want to do some brake work and instead of using the truck's jack (from the engine compartment), I'd like to use my 3 ton floor jack. I just do not have a clue where it's safe to position it under the truck. Can someone help me by either telling me or sending a jpg showing where I can safely lift from (both sides and front and back)? Thanks! |

sit the radius arms in the cup of the floor jack so the cup is centered right under the axle tube. then place a jackstand under the axle tube and lower weight onto the stand before the work. NEVER TRUST A FLOOR JACK |

Using wood blocks on one half of the "cup" of the floor jack I jacked it up on the axle on the side of the differential closed to the middle. I just found the center so it would raise evenly on both sides. You just have to hold the wood while jacking...LOL. And always, always, use jack stands as soon as you can get it up high enough. I have pictures on one of these CD's around here....I'll find it eventually. |

Thom...I may be a little dense but I'm still not sure where to actually place it...right on the axle itself? or the arm attached to the axle? |

You can jack it up on the axle tube itself. Some precautions. 1- NEVER use a block of wood on top of the jack's cup. the cups have lugs on them to prevent the item being jacked from sliping or walking. Remember when your jacking it up, the angle changes as the vehicle goes up and the jack actually starts traveling inwards. If you have a block of wood on the cup, it can slip out and down comes the truck. 2) NEVER get under the vehicle while jacking it up. If it slips you CAN'T move out fast enough. 3) ALWAYS use jack stands under the vehicle after you jack it up to the desired height. Place the jack stands under a solid point under the vehicle and gently rock the truck, it should be SOLID. If not repostion the jack stands. NEVER trust the jack to hold up a vehicle while your working under or around it. I had a friend loose 3 fingers when his 3ton floor jack failed while doing a brake job and the rotor crushed his fingers. |
