97 Disco with 85K on the clock, lifted (over a year ago). A vibration started two days ago and has gotten progressively worse; to the point now that I don't think it is safe to drive. It starts at about 55 and gets worse to about 85 then goes away. The vibe only happens under load. I also noticed that it is worse when under load and cornering. Yesterday I also got a strange noise accompanying the vibration.

I HAVE searched archives and am checking many things, however, this morning I got under the truck and I can move the front drive shaft side to side so I am assuming that I have some bad U-joints so I am starting there.

How much of a PIA is it to get these out?

Anything I need to know before I rip it apart?

Any other suggestions as to what may cause the vibe?

Thanks,
Chip

if you ccan move them side to side it is a u joint or two. probably better off to change both but they are expensive, i got a deal at 143 cdn. unless anyone knows of a better price, that is going to hurt the most. any shop should charge no more than an hr for labour to change them out.
Mine went a week ago and now i am chasing a different vibration around, i think(hope) it is just a wheel balance thing. but i am going under today for another looksee......

This isn`t too bad, at least it never broke up while doing 85, that is nasty.
You will need to get the prop off, 8 bolts, and remove UJ.
You will need circlip pliers, and a vise with big enough jaws to push cups out and replace them, you will need two sockets of the right diameter as the cups to do this, hence big vise.
Take your time as the needle bearings can drop out and get squashed as you close it up.
Also it is a good idea to make marks on the prop so you can put it all back in the same place.
Best of luck

If you search u-joints.. I think there was a thread with NAPA part numbers and are available at any store.

If you want to isolate this as the vibe. Drop the front drive-shaft then take the truck for a spin. Put it on diff-lock and see if the vibe still there.

Hi Chip
the price is about 40$ each, but you can probably source non LR ones that fit.
The price here in the UK is officially £25 each,
But www.paddockspares.com are listing them at £8.50 each, which works out at about $13.50 each.
They say they post to the States, not sure how urgent things are!

Chip,
The NAPA part number is 344, you can go to most any good parts store(not advance auto or simalars)and pick one up for $25. I tried to change out my own on my front driveshaft, but It was a pain, so I took the who DS to a local drive shaft shop and they did the whole think in about 15 minutes, and charged around $10.

wow, would it be un ethical to buy the napa u joint, put it in the LR box, and return it? I got hosed.!!
ON another note, why don't the ends of the drive shaft "line up" is there a technical reason?
the ends of my drive shaft weren't lined up, but a mechanic said they should/ could be.
????

wow, saved just in time. After dropping the shaft I could see the u joint, or should I say what was left of it....only pieces of it were present.

And getting those pieces out of the yoke was no fun.

Thanks to those whom supplied the Napa part numbers, but they were already present in the "what do I need to make a repair on the trail" box, now I just need to replace them.

Thanks to you guys and Dweb for saving me what could have been thousands in repairs.

Grant, I was wondering the same thing about the ends not lining up, anyone?

Chip

I think that you are talking about the front shaft and the flanges not lining up with each other on the shaft. It's called being phased ( I think) and they do it cause it helps keep vibrations down and allows a greater angle of use.

so are they supposed to be offset? Are they balanced? Do I need to take mine in and get un-aligned?
