Well,

What started out as a simple swivel leak fix is turning into a major PIA – turns out the upper swivel pin and corresponding bushing in the swivel ball is shot – badly scored/galled. Anyway – all simple to repair, except I cannot figure out how to get the damn bushing out of the swivel ball??

I’ve tried wrenching, punching, heating, but to no avail. I didn’t want to get to medieval on it and ruin the perfectly good swivel ball. Any help appreciated!

Thanks,

Bill

Bill:
I have a swivel housing/ball on the floor of the shop. I'll take a look at it this evening and get back to you with what I find.

Peace,
Paul

Thanks Paul - I'm probably overlooking something stupid.

Anyone else out there had to do this this? - I can't be alone here :-(

Can you post a pic of the piece giving you problems? I rebuilt one side completely a few weeks ago and don't recall any problems but can't remember what bushing you're talking about exactly. I even made all the gaskets...guess I'm too cheap for a LR.

Is it something you could use a hydraulic press on? If so, take it to a shop and they will do it for like 10 bucks(if you dont have your own press...)

Jason,

Some vehicles have bushings while others, like my RRC, has bearings in their swivels. My bearings came out easily but I dunno about the bushings!

The earlier swivel balls - up through 1987 or so had a different setup - they were roller bearings top and bottom - later models (mine is 1990 RRC ) had a bearing in the bottom and a bushing in the top. It is the bushing I cannot get out.

I have a 25 ton electric/hydraulic press - the problem is supporting the swivel ball while pressing - it's kind of a tough shape to hold in a fixture. Also - I do not want to risk distorting it (its a $250.00 part). The bushing also appears to have a top and bottom part, so it looks like the top should come off (??) and then the bottom part should press out.

Bill:
I finally got things together and took a look at a swivel ball. From what you have described, and my observations, I can see two ways to do this. First way would be to bore a hole in a piece of wood that would correspond with the OD of the top of the bushing (exterior of Swivel Ball) ,position the swivel ball over the hole and carefully drive the bushing out into the block of wood with a punch. if that doesn't work, I'd go at it with a carbide bit and cut it out, or better yet, cut a few chunks oput of it to relieve the tension holding it in.

Pace,
Paul

Thanks Paul - I ended up getting it out the other night - I used lots of heat on the swivel ball around the bushing and then drove the bushing out with a an appropriate diameter socket. Really pretty easy once I got past the fact that i wasn't really going to hurt the swivel ball!

I really appreciate your checking into it though - thanks.

I just realized you're working on a RRC, I didn't see that earlier and its not in your profile. Maybe that's why I don't remember the bushing?! I just thought I was going nuts.
