My 96'discovery has 40k miles and a clean, strong engine. I bought it 8 months ago and it ran perfectly, but during the winter it has gone through 2 new batteries and occasionally the idle will take off and it will want to drive itself around. It will go dead if it sits for more than 2 days (partly because its been a cold winter). I had the alternater checked and it works fine. Lately I will jump start it and it will run fine, but will not start right after I turn it off. When I jump start it again it will start and then immediately stall, unless I hold the gas down. Anybody have similar problems before. Its a 96' 5 speed 4.0 are the idle problems linked to the battery problems possibly? no vacuum leaks, clean stepper motor, all wires/hoses attached Has anybody dealt with anything similar? Thanks, Dave

Not sure, but some comments that might help:

When you say dead, do you mean it won't turn over or it won't start?

If won't crank after sitting suspect a ground wire problem (the battery never really charges). There are several on the Rangie, probably also on Disco.

Otherwise sounds like a sensor problem. Read the 4.0 section on http://www.rangerovers.net/newrremedies.htm#cranksense.

I had a 99' Ford pickup that would just die on me sometimes, and sometimes would not start (had to be towed several times). It was the crankshaft position sensor.

Maybe a leaky injector is flooding the engine.

Thanks for the good tips, by "dead" I meant that it would not turn over.

Yeah, check the grounds. There are at least a couple on the block (back on passenger side and near the front, starter, and on the Rangie there is one on the hood near where it hinges on the driver side.

There might be a diagram under the hood.

If your tach is jumping around, the alternator is on its way out.
