Just did an archive search and couldn't find any info so here goes: Just today my '97 D1 decided that when I start it up in park it needs to idle up to 2500 rpm. When I put it in drive it drops down to a normal level. When I arrive at my destination and shift into park, the rpm jumps way up again. What gives? Obviously there's no sticking throttle or it wouldn't drop down in D. Any thoughts? thanks. |

I have the same problem with my 96' discovery. I think it has something to do with the 4.0 engines GEMS (engine management)system which the 94 and 95 rovers do not have. The stepper motor which sits in the throttle/intake area of the manifold can get dirty and cause idle problems. Vacuum leaks or clogged hoses could also, but it seems like the ECU is deciding to change the idle instead of a vacuum leak. Maybe it is a dirty sensor of some sort. It usually happens for me in cold weather. Does your gas pedal feel really sensitive when this happens, like it is either on or off, no inbetween? |

May be the idle air control valve, or stepper motor, as mentioned before. Seemed to fix mine when I had this problem. Available at your local dealership for $169.00 or at your local AutoZone for $29.00. Check the archives for a cross-over part number.
