I have a 97 D1 with over 120K miles. I have had this A/C issue for the past 2 years or so and the dealer cannot seem to find the problem. Here is the problem. After having the A/C compressor on for about 45 minutes or so, it seems that the temperature dials have no effect and the air gets pretty cold. Then, the cold air stops and I just get regular vent air, even though I can still hear the compressor. If I then turn off the A/C compressor and wait for about 5 minutes, I begin to feel cold air again (compressor is NOT on). After the cold air goes away, I can re-engage the A/C compressor for another round of 45 minutes of cooling, etc. There is no issue with the blower motor/switch position. It happens in all positions. Does anyone have a clue as to what is happening? |

So when you move the blower switch it doesn't come back to life?

Adjusting the blower switch does not change the temperature of the air from the vents, just the amount/speed of air. |

Turn the fan off for a moment or two allow the switch to cool and switch it back on. |

I'll give this a try next time the weather is warm. Do you think there is a problem with the actual switch in the dashboard or with the magnetic clutching mechanism? BTW, what would cause the hot and cold air when the switch is on/off respectively? |

i had a ford that used to do this. i was told that the compressor was freezing up even though you still hear it trying to work. after it warms up and melts the ice, all works well again. what's causing that may be the actual issue. good luck. |
