I recently went to the rover dealership nearby, and saw a Disco I that had been modified to a "Half Bumper" as they called it. They removed the front spoiler, cut the bumper corners in a straight line with the metal part of the bumper for more ground clearance. I was wondering if anyone else has done this and how hard the task is (time wise) and what tools to use for accuracy. -Garrett |

uhh yeah, just about everyone here has done that at one time or another. You need 15 minutes a wrench and something to cut the end caps with (I used a dremel). Look in the archives if you need more. |

hmmm...i think it took 20 minutes total, about at long as it took to untangle the extension cord. I used a jigsaw but I would suggest a dremel or similiar rotary tool with a cutting disc. I removed the end caps and cut them right below the bottom line then used a file (flat bastard?) to even out my cut and round the edge. Then I used a 400 and 800 grit sandpaper to smooth it. I'll post a pic as soon as I find it. |

Jason, your rig is tight. Is that a 96? I'll have to send you some pics of mine tomorrow. I like some of the shit on yours like the rack and rims. Are they both just painted or what? Let me know. Thanks for the pics, that is what i was talking about. -Garrett |

I painted the rack and wheels about 6 months ago, maybe even a little longer....it was sometime last summer. I sanded and primered and used the Graphite Duplicolor wheel paint. After drying I sprayed the wheels with a high heat clear coat. I wanted to powdercoat everything but its seems to be too brittle and chips easily compared to my wheel paint. Also can be very expensive. I wouldn't suggest painted yourself until the weather is a little warmer and less damp unless you have a paint booth to use. I have not removed the tire from the wheel since painting and I don't know how the machine that removes/installs the tires will effect the edges. Considering most factory wheels are painted anyways I don't think it will hurt them. But it only took a few hours to complete so I'll do it again if I have to. I just wanted something differant. I did the same thing on a set of Integra GS-R wheels and looked even better for some reason. My wheels have been muddy, dirty, and had tons of brake dust on them yet still look decent. I just clean them with a mild degreaser like the tire cleaner/engine degreaser (same thing, just the tire cleaner comes out with more pressure) at the car wash and spray off. DO NOT use any of the purple stuff, it WILL leave streaks of paint runs on the wheels. Trust me, what you see was the second time I painted them because of that. You can even wax/polish them if desired....treat them just like the paint on the vehicles body. |

Now you need to take off the weird metal wraparound grill bar to really take advantage of your new approach angle! |

I took a sawzall and cut those tubes off flush at the cross bar. There was 2 1/2" of rust/mung at the bottom of the capped tubes! Just touched up the bare metal with Tremclad and it looks a lot better. YOU have to decide if you will tear off the clevis mounts without the tubes there. ;) (Blue's look like they would have been long gone) |

The polished stainless steel factory LR brushguard saved my entire frontend when I hit a 100lb deer at 50mph....only a small impression on the side of one of the fenders where the brushguard sprung back and hit it. I realize it does drastically cut down on my approach angle but I would rather have to deal with that and a scratched brushguard (which polishes out very easily) vs. a totaled front end. I doubt I'll take it off until I can come up enough money to afford a decent front bumper and winch. |

Everybody seems to worry about the approach angle! I seem to be able to get my front end up on alot more obstacles without scrapping that I can get off! My disco is stock except for sliders, but the first bumper I replace will probably be the rear. It's not compleatly stock. It does have all that useless shit, like LR brushgaurd, light gaurds, latter, and I already broke off the hydrolic step. Back to the subject, I 've heard alot of you say to remove the air dam, I guess that's the same or simalar to what you guys are talking about, or is it. I've looked at mine and cant seem to see where they seperate. So do I just cut all the lower black plastic off the white bumper? Steve |

ohh, you have a Disco II...the pretty painted bumper. There is a writeup on Disco II bumper trimming in the Tech section: http://www.discoweb.org/bumper/index.htm The example in the tech seems to be very crude... trimmed but not smoothed out or sanded. Can I have your foglights?! |

When I first read "half Bumpers" I was hoping some nut wsa thinking of eliminating the Disco's headlights and cutting that part out and making a half bumper only between the frame rails (a la J**P). Come to think of it, it may actually look GREAT. Kinda remenacent of the Series I and II with the lights inside the grill....hmmm...back to the drawing board! |

Blue, I see those rings hanging down there. Have you ever been snatched hard with one side or the other or do you always use a bridle? |
