Just wondering where you guys like to go. I personally like Home Depot for Home Improvement and Sears for tools.

I generally just carve everything I own from stone or wood. Just buy a house?

No been a homeowner for a while. I just like spending time in home depot and wondering where other people like to go.

As a business venture it's quite a story if you believe what's been written about the two founders. However their practices have raised quite a few questions in some areas.

I do wish they would improve their lumber quality. I feel I have to always pick through the pile for the good stuff, so generally I buy wood elsewhere. The hardware selection is very good and for electrical it's the only place to go IMHO.

I find just walking around the place fun, it's a stressless way to get ideas for home improvement. Also it's an excuse to get away from my house, which is louder then HD at times!

I hit Lowes and Home Depot a good bit, they usually have the same/similar item for the same/similar price. Both of them are expensive for wood; cheaper to go to a local mill instead, but, they're more convenient being in town...

FWIW...

I must say Lowe's is my favorite place. It's just so easy to find everything I need...

except when we got flooded, and everyone in the valley was out of water pumps...that calls for more extreme measures.. Northern Tool

Home Depot. Mostly, becuase it's close by. I occasionally go to True Value to rent tools. Near my former home was a Home Depot and Lowes on opposite corners. I would shop them both. The Lowes seem to have nicer plants and more decorating items v. HD.

HD used to be my place. However, over the past year, their service and supply of small items has diminished. The last 4 or 5 times I've needed some small hardware (nuts, bolts, etc) HD would have the spot for them, but would not have them in stock, whereas the local Lowe's would. I no longer even bother with HD unless I'm right there and know they have what I'm after.

Hd used to be the closest place. Now I have to drive 15 Min. to get to Lowes vs. 45 min to get to HD. That's a no brainer. To bad I live in BFSC. Lowes really isn't that bad though. They generally have what I need at a decent price.

I go at least once a week for something. Living in an older home has it's dis-advantages. (too many projects going on at once) Though it is nice to go and just walk through to get Home Improvement ideas. Along with a some "tool" envy.

Lowes has a great section with pull-out trays of grade 5, 8 and stainless bolts and other hardware, all nicely sorted. HD doesn't have anything like that AFAIK.

I've brought about 12-15,000 dollars worth of building materials home from Home Depot on the adventure rack in the last six months renovating a portion of my house...the latest being about 700 lbs of wood flooring up on the rack. Thats how I justify the Discovery with all the toys when my wife bitches. I just say, if we get rid of the disco, everything gets piled on the roof of your bimmer...that shuts her up for a day or so.

HD is great for some things, and so-so for others. In the two years I've owned my house, I've probably been there, oh, at least 200 times. Some HDs are, quite frankly, dumps. Luckily, I've got five within 15 minutes of my house (and one within 2), so I can pick the one that'll probably have what I want.

If you're in California, don't pass up Orchard Supply Hardware (owned by Sears). They're a general hardware and supply store and are always well-stocked and neat. Their bolt, screw, and fastener section is light years beyond what the big-box stores carry. Stainless, grade 5/8, etc. If it's obscure, they have it.

On a bonus note, if you like to ask the employees for help, a lot of the OSH employees are retired contractors who actually know what they're talking about.

On the lumber front, I generally get my wood at a local place in San Jose called Southern Lumber. It's by far the best lumber yard I've ever been to. They carry dozens of different wood species. A great place just to browse. :-)

i got to Lowe's. i went into Home Depot one time for some Grade 8 hardware for my Jeep. they told me i'd have to special order, so i went across the street to Lowe's and just opened the drawer and got what i needed. i don't really buy any lumber (at least not yet) so Lowe's as everything i need.
