What class is the towing hitch for the 96 D1s? is this one compatible? http://www.nsor.com/specials.cfm?specialid=90&month=3 does the price sound reasonable (it's in canadian)? or do I actually need one to tow my D1 from the back? I can't seem to find the recovery points in the back other than the tie down eyes... and the one in the front driver side bumper anyhelp would be much appreciated thanks |

I bought that Warn shackle mount on eBay for about $30 U.S. for my 98 LSE, which has a class III hitch. If you get that consider getting a locking pin for it if you are going to leave it on the Disco all the time. Evan |

I got mine at a tractor supply store for about $35 and it is the warn one. And yea get a locking pin so people won't steal it, I got a master lock one at any auto store. Chris |

You can use the shackle block in the receiver without issues on a D1. As for locking it, someone could steal the shackle itself, even if the block is locked in the receiver hitch. I use a receiver shackle block, but you could use "jate rings" on the rear, mounted just like the front ones. Go here; http://www.discountrovers.com/Specials/specials.html In the rear it will replace the factory tie downs and bolt into their mounts on the frame. I don't like leaving my receiver shackle in my hitch when I'm not wheeling. I too have a warn and I worry it could rust leaving it out to weather. |

http://www.dap-inc.com/acc_frm.htm has them for less $$, it's what I have on the back of my Disco. I've not been recovered myself yet with it but I have recovered more than a few others with it and it's held up very nicely. I too got a lock and it just stays on there all the time. you never know when a Fords gonna need ya. |

thanks for all the input guys "you never know when a Fords gonna need ya." - that's exactly what I towed out of my neighbourhood mud field the other day, I used my stock front recovery ring in the front but just thought it would've been easier to tow him out from the back so I guess there's no place to connect a tow rope at the back on a stock D1 from the factory?

Of course there is. Just use the a pin in the stock trailer hitch. This is what I've always used. Should work about as good as a shackle. Just put the pin through the hook or loop on the end off the rope and your good to go. I to have used this to pull my friends Ford Ranger several times. Fords! Dan |

I wouldn't recomend pulling on just the pin. If you are trying to recover someone or get recovered and the truck is really stuck you can bend the pin. When this happens it can be a major pain to get it out. Plus if you are pulling at an angle your tow strap can chafe on the edge of the hitch, causing wear or tear. A shackle makes life safer and much easier. Evan |

I'm on alot of jobsites/rock quarries where all the guys have company owned Ford trucks. Alot of places we have to go can get pretty tricky. I just like to give the Ford people a hard time. Only reason I haven't pulled alot of Chevy's out is b/c hardly anyone buys them for their fleets around here. So to be fair to Ford owners, it's not b/c you get stuck more than Chevys, it's just that I am around alot more Fords. |

cool thanks for the link Blake hey about that Pull Pak at the bottom of that page anyone tried it? hmm... the disco's like 4400 lbs.... I guess it's not really suitable for a disco...? I always wanted a winch just for the peace of mind but was always put off by the weight and the maintainance since I wouldn't use it too often and probably make me look more like a poser =p |

Evan, for whatever it's worth - if you don't have the receiver shackle mount, you can use the hitch with Craftsman 1/2" drive 6-9-12" extension instead of the pin. It is thoroughly tested and proven not to have residual deformation under >5000lb load. peter |
