Yup, I got rear-ended today in my 99D2. I was behind a school bus that had stopped to unload and a Buick plowed into me. His car was totally crunched, I had damage to the bumper, rear step, lower lights and some trim. Not too bad really. I'm just glad he hit me and not the bus! I'm OK, my neck is sore. I'm looking forward to a good night's sleep with the muscle relaxers my good doctor prescribed!

Anyway, I'm considering taking the insurance money and buying a nice steel bumper. Any suggestions? I pull a camper so I need to keep the rear hitch.

TIA - Off to the couch.

Well not exactly off to the couch, but to a search. Seems like $G, TJM and Trek are my choices. Any feedback on these bumpers or other makes available?

John,

I have replaced my stock bumper with the Trek Outfitters version. No panel cutting required and the trailer hitch can remain in place. I banged it a few times on that AOA trip and it held up well.

Here's a pic:

Greg Davis has been known to manufacture rear bumpers as well. Might want to send him some email.

Thanks Paul, looks good. Was it bolt on or was welding required? Did you buy it directly from Trek? I saw they are $850. How much did shipping set you back?

TIA

Hi John,

#1 Completely bolt-on with a requirement to drill 2 holes. Fancy 90 degree drill required. I managed with a dremel powered snake.

#2 Yes, I bought Direct from Trek.

#3 I can't remember how much shipping was. I want to say somewhere around $125.....? Have it shipped to a commercial address (work) and you will save a few bucks.

The TJM is a nice bumper. Wish they had one for a RR. Have a nice (Percodan) day!

Thanks for the feedback, I hope to meet with the adjuster shorty.

Greg/Steve - your bumper looks great.

I called the local dealer to get an estimate on stock parts (I assume this is who the adjuster will call) Here's the part estimate:

$314 Bumper
$296 Rear Step
$35ea Lights
$35ea Light guards
$45ea Corner panel trim
~$842 parts total
I wonder how much he will give me for labor.

Well the adjuster took a look and he can get it repaired at the dealer with the work guaranteed for $800. That's not enough for the trek bumper, much less shipping, so I guess I will go stock.

Thanks anyway for your feedback.

Oh, yeah, the LR Dealer is giving me a Free Willy to drive while I get this done...

I know, I know... Going genuine and having someone else do all the work, had a little to with the co-pilot...

The shame of it all...

John, you mean she'd rather have a stock bumper than a Greg Davis bumper and a new dress, or a couple of pair of shoes, or some cash??? Just razzin' ya! I'm married also, so I can feel your pain.

Greg, your preaching to the converted. Thanks for the advice, maybe time for another muscle relaxer! :-)

BTW: Who killed your 35's?

Actaully, they were 36"s, and suprisingly enough, my own common sense one that battle (which is a VERY rare occurrance)!

However, my 34"s arrived last week.

I would also recommend the Trek rear bumper. I have had it on my rig since August-ish, and it has taken its share of scrapes and hits. Very sturdy, and a breeze to install. I also used the Dremel with power snake to get into those tough spots on the struts. The nice thing about this bumper is that it protects your rear quarter panels. A nice bonus. I am sure Greg's bumper is really nice too. Whatever you do, dont go back to stock, man...come down off the ledge. It will all be alright...:-)

John reading that parts list reminds me of when I was rear ended, I mean hit from behind. Rear bumper cover scratched and tail light broken, Got a check for 450 spent about 40 to fix tail light pocketed the rest.

John,
I work at a body shop and deal with insurance companies and adjusters all the time. Just know that you absolutely 100% have the right to deny having the work done and having them cut you the check for that amount. In that case you could get a quality rear bumper. I like the look of the TJM and Greg's.

Hey Greg, I sent you an e-mail, did you get it? If not e-mail me.

Brad
