I'm rebuilding my '90 3.9 and looks like I will get a 4.0 short block. 1) Who has the best price on factory short blocks? 2) What modifications do I need to have done on the 4.0 block and crank so it will work with the 3.9 parts? 3) If the 4.0 block has 9.3 CR pistons and I will use the thicker composite gaskets, BUT reuse my 3.9 heads, with the larger combustion chambers, will my CR end up around 8.3? 4) If I get a 4.0 short block and the crank needs disassembly, machining, and re-assembly - it STILL may be less expensive to get new 3.9 +.020 9.3 CR pistons and go that route. 5) Will 3.9 9.3 CR pistons cause problems with the valves if I'm using a cam with .450 valve lift (Isky) but also using the thicker composite gasket. Thanks for any advice you folks can supply eric |

THE 4.0 IS STILL 3.9 BUT RELABLED. IT HAS A BIGGER DIAMETER MAINS AND IT IS CROSS BOLTED AT THE MAINS. YOU CAN USE ALL OF YOUR EXTERIOR PARTS FROM YOUR 3.9 BUT YOU WILL NEED TO CUT NOSE OF CRANK SHORTER(RPI MAKES A SPACER)IF YOU WHAT TO USE YOUR TIMING CASE AND DISTRIBUTOR.TREVOR GRIFFITHS AND I JUST REWORKED AND INSTALLED A 4.6L IN PLACE OF HIS 3.9L IN HIS 95 DISCO AND IT IS SWEET! As Leon said, you need to shim or cut the crank end, or use the crank from the old motor. More important - buy a 4.0 block for a 2001MY DII, it costs half as much as the earlier blocks - about $1,300 from Land Rover dealers in the US. John www.robisonservice.com
