...I searched and came up blank. thought for sure someone would've had this problem already.

did the U-haul trailer light connection thing and set it up exactly as described in the tech section, with the headlgihts turned off the trailer lights work perfect. when i turn the headlights on, the trailer lights completely turn off and stop working. Any ideas?

I figure i'm missing something obvious.

Strange... Do the trailer lights turn off with the headlights (should be no connection)or running lights? In other words, do they go off with the running lights. If thats the case, you've most likey crossed one of the grounds with the hot running light feed.

I haven't read that info in the Tech section, but most trailer lighting problems seem to be related to a bad (or non-existant) ground.

Rather than relying on the ball/ coupler connection for grounding the trailer lights to the truck, it is a good idea to have a large gage wire going from the trailer lighting connector directly to a bare metal spot on the trailer frame (not the coupler body).

A quick test would be to install a temporary jumper between the truck frame and the trailer frame to see if the problem goes away.

Also, be sure to clean the terminals on your connectors.

While this may have nothing to do with your problem, it is worth considering. A bad ground will cause all sorts of bizarre electrical behaviors.

yep, as soon as I turn my headlights on, bam, the trailer lights go off. Turn my lights off, bam, the trailer lights work perfectly again.

Thanks for the advise, I'll triple check the grounds and try that test but I know everthing is connected per the instructions provided. I really appreciate the info. I've really been focusing on the disco, maybe it's the trailer ground giving me my headache. But i'd swear everything's cool there.
