My rear swinging door on my 98 DI is leaking, and i need to know where to get the factory (rubbery) weather stripping. Also i might as well ask where to get weather stripping for all my doors b/c wheeling left me with some water on the floor board and i noticed that the weather stripping had been worn through. Around the outer rear side windows the sealer is started to crack from weather , sun and rain and everything. I visited a website a while back that sold that but i can't find it anymore. Any help would be appreciated.

Garrett, before you spend the $$$ on the rear 5th-door weather strip, check to ensure the rear door is not leaking due to misalignment. With the spare wheel, after a few years the doors may sag. Mine was leaking badly and I thought it was a weather strip issue but in reality, the door was sagging so bad that I could see daylight around the top corner above the hinges. Took it to dealer and $60 later, door was realigned. Tight now.

Bruce Potier,
I called the dealership and they said that if the door has to be realigned at the hinges I am looking at spending roughly $75.00 for 1 hour of labor (dont know what takes one hour). And also for the latch to hit exact it would be $75.00. Also i was curious if your rear 5th door used to rattle when you'd hit a pothole or a dip in the road b/c mine is bad. I am sure that is what the problem is with water getting in. Any ideas on how to fix it yourself would be appreciated. I might have to yank it around myself. Thanks.

Garrett, even though my dealer's rate is $85/hr, they hit me for the actual time instead of a full hour, good guys. As far as rattles, never had these. I wish I had watched the shop guys actually do the adjustment but I was busy with other issues. I have not really put much thought into doing this adjustment myself but then again, I have zero experience in dealing with body/panels/door alignments, other than straightening rear panels from time to time... stupid tree/rocks/me.
Good luck.

Hi Garrett
Check your hinges, as these can and will fail, causing problems that you have described.
That is a lot of weight on the rear door.
Changing hinges or realigning probably requires the help of a friend, and maybe something to support the door, a hi-lift works but put a bit of wood between it and the door.
Oh and take the spare wheel off first.

Pete,
Do you know how to go about working on the hinges? The dealership says that is where most problems occur is on the hinges. I dont want to get them worse than they are by playing with it. Do i just loosen the bolts holding the hinges on and move them till it gets about right?

Hi Garrett
The first thing to check is where the door has dropped, top or bottom hinge. It may be that a hinge needs replacing, and this should be obvious if the pin is bent. If the hinge is OK look at the striker plate on the lock and see by how much it is out. I would suggest you loosen bolts, and not remove them, this is heavy, and trust me, you do not want to drop it.
Try one hinge at a time, the hinge bolts are visible when the door is opened, you will need to lift the door, and tighten the bolts at the same time, hence the extra pair of hands. It might be a case of trial and error, but as long as you don`t slam the door to check it works, you should be OK.
All Discoverys suffer from this problem especially ones that have been used on rough terrain.
You may have to paint the hinge first if you decide to replace one.
Best of luck
Pete S
