Can anybody PLEASE expain what might be causing the rattling sound emanating from the wheel assembly area. It only occurs when I am NOT braking and is comming from the front left and right rear only??? I just got this baby a week ago and everything else seems great! no oil leakage at all!!! not bad for a '96 with 145k.

depending on the road surface, you might be hearing the lug nut covers ratteling, if you've got the alum mags, I also get some ratteling in pot holes because my swivel pin needs a tad of adjustment, i just leave it alone, no harm no foul,

I had the same kind of noise and traced it to loose center caps on my wheels. I little dab of silicone on the backside solved the problem.

The brakes themselves may be dirty with debris and so forth, so when you press on them, there is 100% friction between the pads and the discs that you no longer hear the low friction scratching that you do when your off the brakes...does that make sense? I mean, I know that that is a possibility, but is the english right?

it's more of a rattling sound than scratching. The sound seems to echo a little bit - so I am assuming it is comming from somewhere behind the wheel itself. I will check the the possible problems as suggested above.

Thanks again guys.

Thought the same thing, Craig but he says only happens when brakes NOT applied. Dust shield I believe would rattle not matter what so probably locating pins missing or pressure springs broken (?) on brake pads.

Brake pad anti-rattle springs? The little springs between the pads. One of mine broke before, and gave me a rattle.

thanks for the feed back. the anti rattle spring sounds like the culprit. I will have it checked out.
