I am thinking of buying a Discovery 2, either a low-mileage used 2001 or a brand, spanking new 2002, an SD in either case. So far I haven't found any owners in my area to ask about build quality and any other problems. After doing some low-level research on these vehicles on the 'Net, I am a bit unsure of myself now. There seem to be some hair-raising horror stories out there, albeit nothing much negative on the newest models sold in the US. I would appreciate feedback from anyone who would care to comment on reliablility, on-going problems, etc. The vehicle would be used mostly around town with some light towing and light off-road duty. I drive a Jeep Grand Cherokee and I must say (knock on wood) it has been extremely reliable. Prior to that I drove an Explorer and while not very capable off-road it also was totally reliable. Thank you. |

IMHO, I would get a certified used vehicle with good records. The trucks have a nasty depreciation. Let someone else take that hit in the pocket book. There are plenty to choose from. |

You will find hair-raising stories about every vehicle out there. You drove an Explorer and are still alive to tell the story, right? If you have a V8 Cherokee now, you will miss the power, but love the visibility and solid as a rock feel of the Disco II. By the way, how light is light towing? Your Cherokee, again, if a V8 is probably a better towing candidate. I would definately buy the used one. No sense in taking the depreciation hit. Tom |

Wait four months for the 2003 to come out. Then get the SD and a 4.6 engine.... That's what I would do. |

I just got my first Discovery - a 2002 SD US. I looked at "used" but ultimately decided on new because I wanted a lease anyway. Glad I did. I absolutely love this vehicle. Options added: CD changer, Class III trailer hitch and wiring, rubber floor mats (including load space). This car/truck is very well made IMO (I've owned two BMWs and keep my cars around a long time). The fit and finish is impecable and sitting inside is like no other vehicle I've ever been in (the greenhouse effect - even without sunroofs - is a nice touch). Moving around town I was pleasently surprised by several things 1) the turning radius was much better than expected 2) I can park the Disco in my garage with lots of room to walk around 3) the automatic trans is very smooth and does some nice "engine breaking" going down hill (this is important as I live along some steep, winding hills) this is not the HDC I'm talking about normal on-road driving here. I couldn't be happier with my Discovery. |
