So it all seemed so easy... download tech files on brake bleeding... get a power bleeder, just like they said. Go to Spanish Trail Rovers and download their ABS Code page... go to it...

94 Disco, 199,000 miles on it.

First, the bleeding... Read the instructions. Attach the "pump unit" on the power bleeder... Right rear, perfect. Left rear, perfect... Right front... a little bit of fluid just dribbled out... Hmm... pulled the bleed screw, just in case it was plugged. sprayed it with brake cleaner, the "little hole" is clear. In fact, just for giggles, I tried pressurizing the system with the bleeder, and taking the bleed screw out. I expected to shoot fluid across the garage. It just dribbled out. One clue... all the other "plastic caps" on the bleed screws were fine. This one was, for lack of a better description "melted". The brakes work fine (if it was a bad caliper, I'd expect a pull to the left). The pads were as worn as the other side... the left front bled perfectly, but the right front would only dribble out, and that's it. The car seems to stop OK, and if it wasn't for that "difference" in the whole process, I'd believe I'd done the whole thing correctly.

On a related note... the "dreaded ABS Light" has been on for about 50,000 miles now, and the bulb still hasn't burned out. I thought perhaps I can troubleshoot. Spanish Trail Rovers has a page on diagnosing ABS faults. I "jumped" the plug just like it said (even though I could not find the ABS relay... where the heck is that thing?) and the code I saw flashing was 2-4. The Spanish Trail site did not list this... there was a 2-14, but not a 2-4.

A friend has a 95 Disco... his ABS light is on, too, so we jumped his... and got no codes at all. I couldn't find the ABS relay on his, either, so is it possible my problem is a bad ABS relay? The problem I am getting is that every now and then, the ABS kicks in... and stopping distance is increased. Usually, this happens in a right turn. I've read the "re-seat the ABS sensor" advice... I looked at the sensors, and could not figure out how they are attached. Press fit? Screw in? If press fit, how do you get the bloody things out?

Any help or guidance is very much appreciated!

Don:
You don't need to pull the abs relay to check codes on a disco - only on a range rover. Per the TSB, code 2-4 says: "pump motor locked. 1) if a current failure, exchange modulator. 2) if not, disconnect ECU from harness, fit LR diagnostic connector to ECU vehicle connector switch on ignition. Link pin 9 to pin 11; is pump running audible? Yes: OK No: exchange modulator." But you say the abs is kicking in, so it's hard to believe this code. Try clearing the code (disconnect jumper, wait until the abs light illuminates, and then turn the ignition off) and then seeing if there are other codes stored. You may have to do it many times if this code has recorded itself multiple times.
As for the sensors, use the "search" function
jsut to the right of the title for this thread (not the one in the banner) and look for abs or sensor, and you should find a thread that should tell you the info you're looking for.

Can't help you with the bleed problem, sorry.
Good luck.
John

Disco brake system is simple and straight through - the ABS is a passive system unlike that on a RRC. So, with that being said, if you're not getting fluid out of any caliper, then you have a blockage somewhere.

Try removing the bleed screw and then stomping on the brake pedal (without having power bleeder attached and with MC closed). If this fails to dislodge anything, then you'll have to track down where it is blocked (caliper, hardline, etc).

Thanks for the help. I'll try again to clear the codes and see what's up...

For what it's worth, I did the search... typing in ABS will give more than 100 pages... ABS with Sensors narrows it down to about 78... with 10 postings per page... in fact, I remembered a page that actually had photos... so I tried ABS and SENSOR and PHOTO... still couldn't find it, but I had an awful lot to choose from!

I'll keep looking, and let you know what I come up with. I'll also try stomping on the brake pedal... I am baffled that it's not pulling...
