I was told by a Rover Specialist that the R380 has a pump and strictly requires ATF. He knew nothing of a recall or the use of other types of oil. Does anyone know if there was a recall or where I can find reference to this. Is Redline MTL safe on my transmissions pump. Thanks, Dave |

Dave, All NAS Rovers except for a few of the lt-77 rigs (which use type-F) call for ATF Dexron III or higher. REDLINE sells D4 ATF that would be more appropriate than MTL. Also, "Does anyone know if there was a recall ...." Recall on what? my .02 Craig |

There was an update on no-NAS 5 speeds to use cal-something which was closer to a gear oil. It is in the achieves here somewhere. I switched to MTL from atf and am very happy. I would not use ATF in any rover 5 speed, too thin, shifts great when new but they don't last. Ron |

okay, thanks, I thought that I had read somewhere on here that LR decided to change from ATF to a thicker oil. I will look it up. |

Hey Dave, I posted this in the Defender Technical Section last year, re-positng for your benefit.. "Land Rover Issued the Service Bulletin (TSB) on November 11, 1998. It read that it effected ALL R380 Manual Transmissions. Range Rover from: WA384300 Discovery from: WA752315 Defender from: WA131138 Where these are the last right digits of the VIN. I cant seem to confirm whether the bulletin was released in the US or not, but may not have been, as LRNA stopped importing manual transmission vehicles in 1997. Any how, the Bulletin specified to change the Lubricant from ATF to a Product produced by Caltex of Australia, but Marketed under the Texaco name. TEXACO MTF94. I have not tried to find it in the US, and it may or may not be available here. However, RedLine Oils Produces a product named MTL (Manual Transmission Lubricant) that has virtually identical specifications, and is probably the best lubricant you could pour into your R380. Both the MTF94 and MTL are Rated as GL-4, 70W80 Gear Oils Hope this is of some help to you" I've been running it for some time in both my Rovers, and Have been very happy with it. I second Ron's comments, It is probably the best lubricant you could pour into your R380.... ~Scott T. 95 D-90 (JEEPETR) 96 Discovery (5-Speed) |

Redline MTL is safe in the R-380. I called Redline and MTL is what they recommend. They warned me that it might shift a little stiffer in cold mornings. It does for the first shift or two. I have had it in there since April of 2000; about 70,000 miles. You can't be too careful with an R-380. They are strong but just don't last very long. Don't use gear oil. It will eat up the bronze synchros. |
