Ok,

This one is really starting to tick me off. On hot restarts (drive 20miles go into store for 30minutes-2hours come out try to start vehicle) my disco will stall. Only happens when truck is warm, no check engine light.

The truck starts and then the idle goes really low and it stalls. It has on very rare occasion does this while driving at idle. Oil light sometimes comes on when at this extremely low idle (<200rpm). Runs fine otherwise.

Replaced breather hoses and cleaned breather, set base idle and cleaned and checked stepper motor. Runs only the best oil and gas. New air filter, plugs and fuel filter have about 20k on them, wires are probably original but I don't think thats the issue.

Any ideas? I am at a loss.

Ron

If you've cleaned the stepper motor and it still does this maybe a bad stepper motor?

When I hook it up it is reading right around 30, if it gets more consistent I will try that.

Also if it were the stepper motor why would it only do it on hot restarts?

Kind of sounds to me another part of fuel system to me. I had same situation, OBD threw no codes and I started w/ stepper motor, looking at injectors, so on and so forth. kept stalling when warm- swapped out fuel temp sensor, be damned- the problem went away. My guess is that mixture was to rich to burn fully or to lean to keep going? The computerized fuel management is the one part of the Disco that I think is more prone to going haywire and not telling why. God, I miss carburators....

Which fuel temp sensor did you replace the one in the rail that tells the actual temp of the fuel? Or the one in the intake manifold that tells the computer how much fuel based on the temp of the engine?

I will check on monday.

96 Disco mine does the exact same thing. I think that I may have narrowed it down to the MAFS...only when the truck is warm. Very rarely happends in the cold weather either. I will let you know. Anyone else have any opinions on this?

Where did you get the fuel temp sensor - was it a Rover part or is there an alternative? (i.e. Rover idle air valve $212, GM / AC part $29)

Thanks

Hey guys,
I think my truck may have this problem but to a much lesser degree. It just smells really really bad when started warm. Definately way too rich. I have OBD2 and it's not throwing any codes. Anyone know if there's a fuel sensor area on the OBD2? Hopefully we can get to the root of all of our problems.

I have a similar problem with my 95. I was having fuel problems, and I ended up replacing the fuel pump, and fuel pressure regulator. I have new wires, plugs, and coil.

It'll start right up if I give it gas, but if I just let it try to idle, it'll usually die, or it'll idle up to 750, drop down to almost zero, stutter, and go back up to about 500. I replaced the stepper motor today, and it had no noticeable help.

Note this still happens regardless of temperature, but happens less when it's warm. So are we maybe looking at a similar problem? My thought leans toward the throttle position sensor, since we had an IROC that had a similar problem and the TPS fixed it, but it's fairly expensive OEM. Anyone know of a GM / AC replacement?

Autozone has the throttle position sensor, its a wells part with a one year warranty, part number TPS4126, sells for $65. Those of you that don't have an autozone you can order online at autozone.com.

on mine it was the MODULE AMPLIFIER that caused the exact same symptoms. changed it and bingo - problem solved.

ok, i've got a similar problem. drive my '94 around awhile, no problems. then, at a traffic light or whatever, it'll start idling down erratically before dying if it don't hurry up and cram it into neutral and feed it gas. changed the stepper motor, but no fix. only code my box is flashing is for an o2 sensor. that couldn't be it, could it? be nice if we all had the same problem with an easy solution.

how much is a modular amplifier and how much is a fuel temp sensor for the manifold? It they're cheap may as well replace both.

I had the amplifier module crap and timing would wander down and go into a hunt cycle. I had a similar hot start problem on a Saab when the check valve on the fuel pump was leaking by.
