Hi, Jeff. If you haven't done a Search yet, you might want to give it a shot. The GPS topic has been brought up a number of times with some fantastic opinions and info. For example, when I ran a search of "Magellan GPS" I got back 11 results. Searching for "Garmin GPS" yielded 35. Terrific "real world" advice in most of those messages (which screens are good during the day, color vs. non-color displays, downloadable maps, etc).

FYI - I just saw an ad in Dick's Sporting Goods flyer for a Garmin GPSIII for $179. I thought that was pretty cheap. They list the regular price as $369.

I haven't looked it up, but here's their website:

I don't have any personal comments on those particular models, but I have some resources for you to check out. I have a two year old Magellan MAP330 and like it a lot, but I find the screen hard to read while wearing sunglasses, and I could wish for a larger display. But as you said, the hefty discount makes it a worthwhile purchase.

John Moore,

Is Dick's Sporting Goods local to you? Never heard of them and the web site doesn't list the GPS III. I was looking at that, but the price was higher than I wanted. but $179 is pretty good.

Lawrence,

I've read some of the threads, but was asking about two specific units. Since models change and people buy things since previous threads, I wanted to ask a fresh question.

thanks all for the links,

jeff

Jeff, yes they are local. I live in Albany, NY. The ad had a toll free number. 1-877-846-9997. Try giving them a call. The ad is dated today. I'm not sure how long the sale price will last. I've usually seen that model for around $299. From what I have seen on this site many people here have the Garmin GPS III.

Hey! I just read the fine print, the ad says, "remanufactured with full 1 year warranty, Limited to quantities on hand, 1 per customer." I guess that explains the low cost.

If you still interested, here's a number to a local store, maybe you can buy it and they can ship it to you. 518-464-1948.

I have a Garmin eMap. I have been happy with it.

Hope this helps or let me know if you need more information.

Haven't used recent Magellans... used to, they felt flimsy compared to Garmins, so, I migrated to Garmins (or Trimbles at work), and haven't kept up w/ them since. Looking at the last REI catalog I had, they seemed decent enough, but sorry, no trigger time with one.

FWIW, if you really work the shopping search engines over, you can usually find any GPS you want for a good bit less than retail... just in case you decided to go w/ Garmin.... wink wink nudge nudge.... :-)

Check this website too. Lots of gps talk on a BB similar to this one. They also have a for sale section.

I agree with Leslie. I too use the Garmin 76s for wheeling and hiking. The screen is to small for driving and navigating so if that's your goal get a street pilot by Garmin. I use Trimbles at work also and I never have been to impressed by Magellian. I had a gps III from Garmin, the only thing I didn't like was the lack of memory. If you get a magellian, make sure it has lots of extra memory and the ablity to upload topo maps into it. Having those maps in the gps is a really nice tool. But in all I prefer Garmins interface better than all the others.
