A non-Rover dealer is telling me that this '96 Discovery needs a new draglink. It pulls to the left and has a tendancy to wander.

I could understand alignment and tie rod ends. But the draglink itself? Does this make any sense?

Are oilpan gaskets and leaking power steering pumps difficult or expensive to replace? They claim it just has a new O2 sensor installed for big bucks ...

Brake peddle is kind of soft but it has 85% pads all around.

It only has 74,000kms but seems to have some issues already.

On the drivers side rear below the rain gutter on the roof, it appears that there is a thin crack in the paint and a bit of goop at the end. It doesn't appear to have been repainted ... though normally I would think there was a repair done on that panel.

I had a bit of a problem moving the 4H/4L selector around, probably should have read the manual. Is what appears to be the 4WD light on the dash supposed to stay on all the time or is the center diff still locked?

Its such a great price though I'm tempted to not pass it up.

Thanks thanks and thanks.

Unless the Drag link is bent, there shouldnt be any reason to replace it.
Also, Inspect the tie rod ends, and see if the rubber boots seem "dried out" or cracked. If they are, then they need to be replaced....

if you are looking at a light on the dash that looks like both axles and lines that meet in the center - the diff is probably locked... not great to drive on tarmac while locked.

If your draglink is bent the steering wheel will be off center but from my experience, it will still drive fine and not wander.

Since this is a truck you are looking at, be suspect. The oil pan gasket is "relatively" cheap and easy to do yourself. The PS pump cost a few $$$ but is something you can swap out. To help drive the price down, get some estimates from a LR dealership. If they are saying it "just has a new O2 sensor installed for big bucks " then they are trying to use that logic on you in reverse so it's a fair game.

Check the rear main seal to see if that's not leaking too instead of just the oil pan.

I'd be really interested to find where that crack came from. If this truck has 74K there really isn't a logical reason you should have any cracks in the body panels other than something hitting it.

Be suspect. Get the VIN and run the number on carfax, etc... Run the VIN by a dealer and see if it has had any maint. done at any dealer. Check for repair records.

It sounds it could be a bit neglected. Check under the floor mats. Take it to a dealer if possible and have them check it out, or at least some mechanic who can check compression, fuel pressure, brakes and all that fun. If it's that good of a deal it's worth the insurance of having a mechanic check it out. If the used car dealer won't allow it....just walk away, there are plenty of other Discos on the market.
