I have given up on installing a Kenwood CD receiver in my 96 DI using the PAC OEM-2 supplied by Crutchfield. I have gone through every possible wiring scenario and cannot rid the system of the bad hum/static. The Crutchfield techs, while pleasant, couldn't offer any more suggestions or even cite a successful install in this vehicle.

I've checked and re-run grounds, used every possible wiring method, and nada.

The stock am/fm/cass system worked fine.

Has anyone had complete success w/ this? where there is no static/hum?

Guess it's off to Circuit City or a good shop now.....

I rewired completely it was the simple way. But I put in 2 amps and all new speakers and a sub. Having only a tape deck was driving me insane, and I thought it was a waste to put in a cd changer when I could use a mp3 player.

Do it right and throw away the stock amp. Pull all the seats and door panels, in an hour if you are proficient. Rewire correctly with shielded wiring and a fat 12v fused supply wire right from the battery.

exactly :-) amps fit under both front seats nicely. and if you get a Mp3 player why would you need a cd changer?

Joe - Did a similar thing in a DII with no luck.
I ended up getting rid of the stock amp and replacing it also.

The best you can do (besides getting rid of the stock amp and doing what others have suggested) is adjusting the gain on the PAC thingie to the lowest possible level so that you do not hear the whining noise. This means you need to crank the HU's volume way up, but at least you won't hear the alternator whine....

Hope this helps...

If you use the stock Power and ground wires behind the dash you can run your speaker leads to the stock amps. Disconnect the wireing harness from the amp and cut it off. Buy using a battery you can find what wire goes to what speaker and just hard wire the speaker leads. As far as the engine noise, check to see that the power wire is not connected to the starter switch. I have heard that this causes a problem with engine noise, but I have never experenced it. Have you tryed just running a piece of wire to the battery to see if this is the problem? Another thing to think about, but I dont know if it would matter, most new head units are anywhere from 25 to 65 watts. Maybe the head unit is over powering the stock amp. Just try and bypass the amp, I dont think you will even miss it. Just a thought. Good luck

Thanks for the suggestions. My idea was to spend as little as possible on a decent head unit, I'm no audiophile and can't justify $500 or $1000 to listen to my shitty music.

I'll give this one more whirl based on Will and DC's comments, and what jess told me in private mail.

I have a kenwood deck and a kenwood amp and the kenwood satilite thing. I like kenwood. I also have two 12" subs. When I installed mine I bypassed the stock amps but used the wires running into the stock speakers from the amp. Everything works fine except the stock rear subs. But that did not matter to me. just call Circut City and ask them a hard wire is if oyu cannot figure it out.

I'd think you have to run low level to the LR stock amp. I haven't checked but I wouldn't think they would have a high power headunit and then an amp after that??!? So, if you then go attach high (speaker) level to the inputs it would be whining and popping and sounding like crap. Try it with the low level outputs (RCA jacks) that might clean it up some.

Unfortunately if you want to overcome the noise of muds, roof racks, vibe-ing drivelines and the like just throw anything LR away and put some decent stuff in there.
