I was researching the archives about winches and ran across the major cons of using a receiver mounted winch cradle. The arguement is that the receiver is designed to hold 5000 lbs, not the 8-9000 lbs needed for recovery by a winch. If this is the case, why would it be okay for me to use a receiver mounted shackle block? I have one and have used it for snatching other trucks and pulled myself out with a hilift. Was I lucky that the hitch didn't fail? Why would the load be different from a winch? I am using a warn shackle block and a locking hitch pin. I understand if the winch is pulling at 9k it is pulling on the cable and its anchor at that rate and on what ever the winch is hitched to also at that same rate. So would it be safe to pull on one of those hitch mounted shackle things for a recovery? |

I used my hitch and some rope and pulled a F 150 extened cab truck out of an embankment. No problems. |

This winter I snatched a f350 crew cab out of a snow bank. I am thinking a "dynamic" pull like that is okay, but what about a winch pull? Say a loaded disco in a ditch that's at a 40 degree decline, the truck is high centered and the best place to winch from is to pull the truck back up the incline via the receiver shackle. The pull starts fine, but the truck hangs up and starts to load down the winch to almost its stall speed. Is the receiver hitch now taking a 9000 lbs load? Is it okay to pull on that point like that? |

The rating on hitches has to do with not only the strength of the hitch but with safe towing weight of the trailer for a given vehicle. The pull being described above should be fine. When the truck hangs while winching, you should stop and reassess the recovery situation. If you rip the hitch off, you're doing something wrong. |

the 7000lb load on a hitch is the max mangable for trailers this stands loose from the tech. max. load from the weld on hook on on a RR/disco frame wich is much higher. to be safe use 2 military style U-shackle's on the oficial recovery point's use a sling and than hook up your recovery rope or winch cable for heavy duty recovery for safety you can use a thirt 3th sling as a brake a way cable on the hitch reciever
