I decided to try 235/85/16 OTR Mud tread retreads on my Disco. Here's the link

http://www.high-tec-retreading.com/sizes.html

I have never had retread before. Anyone who has can comment? Are they OK? or am I going to die in a firey Fierstone style roll over crash?

So far I have taken a bit of abuse over these retreads from a couple of the Moderators. Anyone else here care to tell me my head ain't right???

1) ~$50, versus, say, ~$100 for an R/T from Tirerack. True, you've cut your initial outlay in half, but...

2) You're driving a newer Land Rover, not a Bronco II.

3) How many highway gators have you to dodge before?

4) How long will a retread last? The warranty is for 24k mi, most new tires are 36k or longer. (But is the retread tire still going to be viable past 24k? versus a new one?)

It's common to see retreads on Series Rovers imported over from the UK, but think about the highway speed at which a Series Rover is going to be travelling, compared to your Disco.

IMHO, I'd cut costs elsewhere. I *might* consider putting a set of mudder retreads on a second set of rims, and use new tires for daily driving, but, I don't think I would there, either.

IMHO, FWIW....

you might also want to consider going with a larger CB tire and adding the Cheap Bastard lift to go along with it.

Well Paul, I have enough lift to keep the highway speed down to about 70 or 75 max. Beyond that, the Disco starts to sound and feel like a Cessna. Of course, I would not want suffer a major tire disintegration at that speed.

I can't say that those highway alligators are necessarily from retreads, can you? I have had 3 tires delam and pitch a tread in my life and none of them were retreads. Also, those alligators look so big I figure they come from tractor-trailer rigs. The weight is all different. Those tires work much harder I think.

Leslie, you ain't seen my Disco, you might mistake it for a Bronco II. Hehehehe.

Blue, you know me and your right. I am a sick-cheap bastard. :-)

Don't think that I am convinced here. I just thought I would try retreads since you never really know if shit will work until you try it for yourself. You all can discuss these points after I am dead from the roll over crash.

When I was in high school and college I was a mechanic at a go-cart track. We loved retreads because they were dirt cheap. They were also fun because they trended to blowout and cause fun spinouts.

I say go for it. Unless you do alot of interstate-type driving.

Yeah well Nash,

I allready went for it. They are bought, mounted and Equaled. They work good all around. I just wonder if they will last and if they will kill me.

A pal of mine ordered a set from them, for a trooper, once you figured in shipping, you're up to 65-70$ ea, and they did wear very quickly! 15k or so they were quite worn, and besides that, you're gonna get a load range c, if you're comphy with all that go get them, you know at pep boys, you can get a good mt for 95$ and a warrenty for 5$, so i geuss what i'm saying is, NNNNOOOOOOO dont get them.

Paul,

of all people who ever called used a term "cheap bastard" on other than themselves, I don't know anyone with children. Let them all suck a big one, for they don't know jack shit.

Leslie, the brand new Futuras with 30kmi projected life all but melted in less than 20, at a cost of $82 per tire. The 80k-rated Michelins rarely last 50 on a Disco, at a cost of... now it's more like 180 per tire. I've driven my dad's car on retreads for years and years in Russia, without a single delamination.

I'd say go for it, but de-rate your highway speeds (given with rather warm summer in San Joaquin valley), and keep an eye on the thread and shoulders.

ok, Blue makes an exception. OTOH, he's got just a lil baby yet, so he still doesn't know jack shit (so he can stay in the big suckers' group for now)

Paul S. was only quoting, i hope :-)

Wow, I don't really know what or how I got it stirred up so badly. Don't take me seriously unless I'm giving technical direction.

As for retreads, I have used them in the past (20 years ago). Had some dramatic blowouts and was glad my father was driving once as I think I would have stained my pants, judging from his hugging the steering wheel to try to maintain control.

As for the tires I have on my truck, I spent more than $150 each for them, expect to get good mileage from them and expect them to protect me and my family. Driving 100 miles daily, I need the tread wear and safety.

Peace,
Paul

Yes, but if those 80k Michelins only last 50k don't you get an entire new set for free?

The Army uses retread, so does all the government fleets. I probably wouldn't get them for my Disco, which drives long distances, but I would for my Series truck.

I agree that retreads are the way to go when it's time for new tires on your fleet of Discoveries.
