To kind of bump your thread Chris, as well as add my own question - Does the alternator in a 4.0 work in a 3.9 with a serp belt? And, possibly, would the DII alternator just drop in as a replacement in a 3.9? Thanks!

Darn good question. In 1996, Rover changed the configeration slightly with a different size pulley. I was told by Mobi weld a while ago that there is a Bosch model that can be used as long as you change pull the pulley off your old unit and put it on the new.....
Napa lists Bosch units for 3.9s so there is hope here

A few clarifications since I just picked up my alternator yesterday from a rebuild shop. I spent a lot of time talking to a man that has been rebuilding starters and alternators for 23 years. He told me this FWIW
1) Despite what the dealership may tell you 95% of the time voltage regulators do not go bad. He told me that if electronic components last 25 hours under load they usually last approx 25 years.
2) People service their wheel bearings at regular intervals but the exposed bearings in an alternator almost never get serviced. My alternator had 123k on it and what I believe are the original bearings...
3) The reason I took my alternator to be rebuilt was because I was getting all kinds of ear piercing squeals from the alternator and after testing my alternator under a full 100 amp load and disassembling my unit the official report was that nothing was wrong with the alternator but as matter of course I had the bearings and brushes replaced.

THE PROBLEM: I bought a serpentine belt from PEP Boys not realizing the significant difference in quality. The belt stretched after only a month and the squealing was the belt loosing traction. This was verified by the accumulation of belt dust all over the alternator and the certification of the internals.

Lesson: DO NOT BUY SHITTY BELTS....I wasn't aware that DAYCO brand makes multiple levels of belts in different qualities. Incidently he only charged my $75 to test, completely disassemble, replace bearings and bushes, and clean and repaint the unit. Looks as good as new. If you would like his info I can forward. He is located in Newark, DE.
