i think i need to replace this part on my '94, but want to make sure i'm getting the right thing. i've seen it called anything from an idle bypass valve to an idle air control valve or an idle air control motor. are these all the same part? how come it's a hundred and some odd dollars at atlantic-british and 36 bucks at napa? actually, i can't find the part listed on napa or any other car parts site, but somebody told me it is napa # mpf31738. can anyone verify this? thanks.

Kevin:
The idle air control valve is most commonly referred to here as the stepper motor, but they are all the same thing.

It costs more from Rover because they bought it from AC-Delco, put their name on the box and magically, it became different than the exact same part that came on many GM vehicles. FWIW-the workshop manual lists this as an AC-Delco part!

Have you disassembled it to clean? Often-times, this is enough to keep the truck running.

Peace,
Paul

thanks, paul. yes, i dissembled it and cleaned with carb cleaner. i also sprayed and cleaned the inside of the plenum for good measure. my truck still dies occasionally at stop lights and such, though. it does fine until it warms up, and then the idle will get erratic (sometimes) when driving in town, stopping at lights. it does the same when i change loads (headlights, a/c) on the engine. do you know of any cross references to check out that part number i listed? that number was given to me here on d-web, and it comes up as an i.a.c. valve on napa, but when i try to locate the same by putting in my land rover stats, i get n/a.

These vehicles are very sensitive to battery voltage variations. You might put a voltmeter on the ciagarette lighter and monitor the voltage s you drive. It may be enlightening. You may also have a bad ground somewhere in the lighting circuit, or charging circuit.

The fact that it gets worse when it is warm is curious and might indicate a bad temp sensor somewhere.

You are unlikely to find the numbers coming up at NAPA for our trucks, but they surprise me quite often. As I said earlier, the IAC valve is indeed a GM part, identical to that used on many of the high performance vehicles. I believe the IROC Camaros had the same IAC valve, along with some Trans Ams and some Corvettes.

well, the part was correct. got it in, drove around, life was good. no stalls. pulled back into my driveway, and my friggin' beast dies on me. oh well, back to the drawing board.
