When in England at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of empire building by George Bush.

He answered by saying that, "Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return."

It became very quiet in the room

Powell should have followed it up with a full force backhanded bitch-slap and a resounding, "Nail that to your cross & worship it."

that article is from the economic summit in Davos which is not in England. I couldn't find the question or the quote. maybe I'm missing something, yet, it seems it is from another source which I also would like to read.

After reading the text, I do think that empire building is what the former Archbishop is speaking about. It is a conversation in regards to the use of soft power, (aid-medical/food, trade, and money), as means to a wanted ends v. the use of hard power, (military).

Mr. Powell in his answer says:

"We have gone forth from our shores repeatedly over the last hundred years and we’ve done this as recently as the last year in Afghanistan and put wonderful young men and women at risk, many of whom have lost their lives, and we have asked for nothing except enough ground to bury them in, and otherwise we have returned home to seek our own, you know, to seek our own lives in peace, to live our own lives in peace. But there comes a time when soft power or talking with evil will not work where, unfortunately, hard power is the only thing that works".

I think that Mr. Powell is letting the conference know that the world does not have to question the purpose of the United States. Can one 'infer' empire building? Yes.

that is what I also read. so guess the "quote" was paraphrased. still, a pretty cool statement.

thx for the additional pair of eyes to find it.

I posted this on the Politically Correct thread, but thought it places many events in perspective. Excellent points about US empire building.

Stacey,

You don't have to sell me on Powell - he's the only part of the administration I trust inherently.
