So I changed my auto trans fluid today and in checking my manual I was expecting to see 10.5 qts of goo, instead I got about 5 qts. So I am refilling and I only get 5 qts. in until it shows as full, so Im wondering what is up, do I have an excessively small auto or what?? Help.. Thanks!!! |

Some of the fluid stays in the torque converter. Freaked me out the first time I changed the fluid too. |

A trick some smaller shops use when changing the auto TRANSMISSION fluid is to ramp up the front wheels and run the engine in hopes to push as much as the fluid out of the torque converter as possible. I don't know what effect this may have on longevity, so I am not recommending it (just saying you COULD do it). Larger shops have a machine that purges all of the fluid out of the transmission and refills it. |

Easier to drain, refill run for a minute then repeat three or four times and get most of it out that way. |

Jacking up the front wheel and running the engine will not force more fluid out of the converter. BUT whatever you do,,, DO NOT run the transmission without any fluid in the pan thinking you'll push fluid out of the converter,, Unless you do it near my transmission shop so I can have the job of replacing your front pump and what everelse gets damaged. Draining the pan and replacing the filter is just about all you need to do. If the fluid is really bad, replace the filter and oil, run the engine a couple of miles and replace the oil again. Only if it's really really bad will I recommend a complete flush. But usually by that time, it's too late anyway. I don't believe in the quick flushing jobs without droping the pan, replacing the filter and seeing what's in the pan. |
