I know this has been discused before but......
I've gotten hung up on the rear diff several times and consider myself lucky to have not busted anything. So I want some diff guards, but do I need both front and rear. I dont ever remember getting caught on the front, always the back.
I was looking at the roverbiz gaurds and this is for a 98 DI
Thanks,
Dan

Get both....

and if you are only getting one, you should get the front one...

Your front diff is much more vulnerable to show stopping damage and I think that is where a guard should be. I have noticed that rear diff guards act like a land anchor and hook on all kinds of stuff and stuck the Disco real fast.

I would do protection on both but if you are going to do only one, I agree with Paul and do the front. Most of the front hits I have taken, usually, have been unexpected surprises like going through stream crossings or climbing over one rock and not seeing the one on the other side until the truck suddenly has stopped dead. I have crushed a few SG front diff covers in those situations but better them than a big hole or crack in the diff where you will need to replace the axle skin or, if you are handy with a welder, cut and replace the damaged section.

As for rears covers, I guess you could look at it like some protection is better than none but if you want true, full rear diff protection, you might look into the Southdown rear guards that cover the entire diff and not just the back of the diff. However, they are considerably more expensive than covers and as Paul pointed out, can in certain situations, act as a land anchor slowing or even stopping forward movement in soft mud or sand which is a more common issue with the larger, Southdown front full axle guard unit in those conditions.

You only need one if you only plan on hitting the diff with the cover. If you plan on hitting both diffs you should get two. :-)

Nice Brian, never thought of it that way.
