2-1/16 or carefully use a pair of channellocks. PLEASE don't use a chisel, I might have to work on it after you.

Actually, I already own a 2-3/16ths hub tool which I have been using, but it is a little big and I was going to try to find the exact size locally.

quick fix-it tip for that "almost the right size" hub socket-

When you have a more commonly available socket, like a 2 1/8th or whatever, and no exact-sized hub nut tool: just put a shop rag in it - it's worked for me in the past..

lol - step away from the chisel.. and the channel locks

You guys would not believe the hub nuts I've encountered on Rovers! From gouged nuts from obvious use of chisel and hammer to badly rounded nuts from using the wrong wrench.

The torque requirements are modest and if I'm out in the field somewhere and have to pull a blowed up CV and all I have handy is a pair of channellocks, trust me, I'll make do and replace things when I get home.

Sometimes, the right tool is the tool that is right handy. If it was bad enough, a screwdriver and a rock might be enough to get me home.

Just like ethics being situational, the choice of tool can also be situational.

Peace,
Paul

"Improvise, adapt and overcome" Then of course for $18 you can put one in your tool box and take it with you on the trails.

Brian, i have to carry around two hub sockets... and they take up the valuable space where a 4-lb sledgehammer used to sit.

FWIW, the size of Rover's hub nuts is the same as CJ and pre-70 full size jeeps. NAPA stores don't have the sockets in stock, but can order them, typically next-day. As it was mentioned earlier, JCWhitney (and most baby jeep-catering places) have it, too (for 1/2 of AB price).

I am a chisel man , the trick is to get a dull one and just use the same spot every time.. :-)

Peter,

Why do you need 2 sockets?
