My ABS light came on, I had the pulsing on dry pavement etcetera. So, I went out and bought a new sensor - and I'm looking at the thing, and I can't figure out: Why does this thing list for $250 a pop? How does it work? No visible moving parts - magnetic, vibration sensitive? How does it break? Looks just like the one it replaced? Can they be re-built? Explain it to me like I'm three, cause I'm simple on these matters. Thanks in advance. e |

Erik: 1) why? Probably because it has a Land Rover name on it - certainly no rocket science inside. 2) It inductively (magnetically) senses the passing of 60 teeth on the "exciter ring" that is inside the hub; generates a series of electrical pulses proportional to speed (or, if the wheel is locked up and not moving, no electrical signal - hence the ecu knows to let off on the braking for that wheel) 3) from other posters, more commonly they vibrate out of place than break, or get dirty. Conventional wisdom is pry them out gently, clean, and firmly re-seat. In my case, I had two go out that threw "lack of continuity" codes, meaning the electrical circuit had been broken somewhere 4) never heard of one being rebuilt. I suppose if it was a wiring problem that you could track down, you could splice it I gather you have a 95 disco. Have you read the abs codes so that you know which sensor is giving you trouble and that's the one you're going to replace? Otherwise, how did you know whether to buy a front or rear? John |

Roverland San Francisco told me it was front, and I subsequently found one for $75 with one year warranty. I bought it, but suspected that the cleaning and reseating thing might work as well. Thanks for the explanation! e |
