What is the top speed (red line in top gear not crusing speed) in low range for a stock 96 D1? Please don't ask why.

God only knows. It is really, really slow.

I bet everything is stuck and you don't know if you're in high/low range or if your CDL is locked/unlocked. Am I close?

p.s. If you're going >40 mph you are in high range.

Michael..I got to hear the idea you had. btw...I think you can hit 40mph in low. 4 gear in 4 low is about the same ratio as 4high 1st gear.

You cant afford new R+P gears...so you are wondering if you can drive in low range all the time......am i right?

Stock, I got my Disco 1 up to 25 mph. That was 4th gear, no diff lock, in low box. I think I was pusing like 4500 rpms and I stopped there. No sense in flooring it anymore.

The test conditions was on road. Since the vehicle hadn't been off roaded in a few months (:-() I had to tinker with the X-fer box so it wouldn't seize up. So I just cruised around the neighborhood at low speed with the engine screaming :-).

Had My DII to 45 before I remembered I hadn't shifted out yet, and she still had more juice... But then, mine was always different.

I'll bet he is thinking of towing something instead of getting a bigger truck. Either that, or using that low range torque to drag race once or twice.

Cheers,

Kennith

With my 5spd and 235/85 tires, I'm pretty sure I can go over 50 mph on the speedometer in 5th gear. I'll have to try it though now!!

Micheal,
Are you asking about an Automatic or Manual? Since you said "top gear" I assume you mean 4th gear OD and not 5th manual?

Kennith is the big winner!!!
I got into an argument with a friend of mine and told him his ford focus was so slow that my discovery was faster. So I thought if the opportunity ever came I could just dust him in low range for one light. but then again I might have a chance in hi also, they are real slow cars.
Jason: yes an autobox.
NOTE: I do not support street racing in any way. Always take it to a track!

Michael,

If its one of them Ford Focus SVTs, then you might want to back away. My buddy let me drive his and that was a sweet car (I mean, as sweet as you can get for a Ford Focus..). It had the same amount of power as a Subaru WRX but rode better and was more comfortable.

But if its the other crap then smoke em' :-).

Yes I too have been in an SVT focus with 170 hp it is a nice ride. However this is not an svt. Its also not stock it has typical bolt on mods.

Don't ask me how I know this, but in low range, with the type of throttle input you will be giving, the shifts are too long. In the power band the shifts can take up to two seconds, and in those two seconds, he will eat you alive. :-)

Now you are thinking, what if I just do it manually? Well, the same computer does the shifts, so it still takes forever. You will post a better quarter-mile in high range, trust me. And if you have a smaller diameter wheel/tire combo, put them on, you will need all the torque you can get.

That said, you could beat him, but you have to be a damn good driver to do it. You need to keep off that lever and allow your right foot to do the shifting, sneaking off of the throttle a few RPMs over the powerband, then (with consistency) sweep the power back in to give yourself a long, continuous belt of acceleration. If you do it right, your headlamps will be pointing toward the stars the whole way through.

If you are running larger than stock tires, forget it. :-)

Cheers,

Kennith
