put diff lock in neutral, and put transmission in park. I speak from an expensive lesson.

Went wheeling 5 miles from home. The electronics were wet so she died and wouldn't restart. I had my buddy tow me home. I put VSC and in neutral and towed her home, not once did we go over 30mph. Next day no reverse and wont shift down. Needless to say I have a transmission sitting on my garage floor ready to go in. Upon investigation I found the proper way to tow. VSC in neutral, transmission in park.

Aaron, I am going to be towing up to the mountains behind a RV so we will be on the highway most of the time. Will this still be ok on the trans?

I'm no transmission man, but I would think so. I would call a local transmission shop and not the LR dealer and double check. I would think you would be okay as long as all fluids are good and you use common sense.

dissconnet the front drive shaft off of the front of the transfer case if you will be towing with the back wheels on the ground. also put trans and transfer case in nuetral.

Hmmm.. I am getting different answers here. Does anyone have ACTUAL towing experience with long distances?

if both are in neutral it still allows the transmission to spin which will tear it up. If a vehicle is rear wheeled you lift the ass end. if it is front wheel you lift the front. I would talk to a transmission shop, disconnect all drive shafts, or buy a trailer.

Hey Jason. I also have been trying to find about towing my 1990 range behind my r.v.Ive talked to a few different people and eveyone says the vsc will not get any lubricant and the only way to flat tow is to dissconnet both drive shafts.Im thinking about using a tow dolly so ill only have disscount the rear drive shaft. If you get any info please let me know thanks Joe p.

i fucked up my statement.
i fucked up my initial statement.
i meant to say if you are towing with front wheels off the ground then discconect the rear shaft.

the automobile/transmission will have no idea that the car is moving if that rear drive shaft is disconnected. think about it... the rear will just be free wheeling and the trans/transfercase will be idle.

sorry for confusion.

Jason,

the ZF doesn't have rear pump; if you force the internals to spin (and they will spin even with the t-case in neutral if the transmission is in neutral), you'll be running it dry. Putting the transmission in park, and transfer case in neutral, in theory should allow you to flat-tow the rangie as long as you want. I believe user manual has the same instructions.
