Hi,

I just bought a 96 Disco and it seems my power steering is going south. The pump leaks from the four screws that are on the top when I look down on it. I keep adding fluid and then it is fine (for a day and then it all leaks out) I am going to try to replace it myself. Any pointers? Also I want to buy a rebuilt one to save some cash. I was told to get it at mariadian? Do you know how much a rebuilt one should cost?

Thanks guys for your help in advance!

Howard

Try some of the Lucas PS Pump leak stopper stuff (whatever it's called...).

New ones pop up on E-Bay for about $300-350, so I'd imagine a rebuilt one should cost less (but don't count on it).

Yeah I tried the power steering leak stop stuff and had no luck.

You guys know how long it should take me to install it? Any things a first timer should know about.

Agian Thanks,

Howard

12 hours...

2 hours to remove the serpentine belt and get to the pump

3 hours to figure out how to get the hoses off the pump

2 hours to remove the pump

1.5 hours to install new pump

1.5 hours to reinstall hoses to resevoir

2 hours to reinstall serpentine belt

Start the engine and run it. A few days later the pump craps out because you forgot to refill the resevoir with PS fluid.

At least the second time around will be quicker :-)

Actually takes about 10 minutes to get the serpentine belt off the pump. Just loosen the tensioner on the other side. The hoses are a BIG pain in the ass...I would suggest using a flare nut wrench to remove them or you can take a cheap box end wrench and cut out a space big enough to put around the hose fitting. Even with the correct tools it will take you forever to figure out how to get the damn things off.

If you want to go the cheap route Autozone sells the pumps for $160 and Napa sells them for like $290.

I think there are a few Land Rover parts places that sell them on the web. You could always get a used one off of a low miles wreck from RoverLand Parts or a similiar place for a decent price.

I had a machine shop make my power steering hoses (rated to 1100psi) for less than 1/3 the cost of the LR OEM hoses (I just had the hoses made to length and used the existing flanges and fitting). I have seen complete PS hose kits from differant rover parts suppliers on the net for under $100.

As a suggestion, unless you have the manual, draw a picture of the serpentine belt routing. For one, it could take you two hours to figure it out. But you can also put it on wrong and it will run the waterpump backwards. Trust me on that one.
