My 96 Disco has a problem and after three days of searching through the archive here I am still at a loss. Problem, under load, at about 2,000 RPM's I get a dull, almost diesel like sound out of the poor thing. It seems to cause a little bit of a bog down in the engine, though that could be in my head. It idles great. I can rev it in park up to 2,000 RPM's or so and it sounds GREAT. Get it under load and it sounds like the engine is about to explode. Through searching, it most closely sounds like problems people have had with cracked exhaust manifolds, but I am just not certain. I can't get out there and check just yet due to recent jaw surgery, but it is getting old not being able to drive the pig because I don't want to can the engine. Any help anyone? |

Sounds like to me that the catalytic converters may be the problem or the engine is starving for air...I would check the air filter and box and work from there. |

My 96 disco started making a ruff metal vibration/grinding noise just last week. It turned out that my rotoflex is falling apart and the metal from the bolts that hold it together are hitting when the engine is under load. Just a thought...

It is the engine having some sort of trouble. I am going to check the air filter and box and go from there. If these ideas don't work hopefully someone will come up with something else. |

check to see if the bolts and gasket between the manifold and down-pipes are intact. had a noise that only showed up under load. both my gaskets in-between the 2 were gone, 1 bolt missing and all were loose. |

I just had a very similar problem on my '96. Exhaust manifold bolt missing and bad gaskets. Runs MUCH quieter now that they are replaced. |
