I recently disassembled/rebuilt the PS swivel ball on my '97 D1 w/100K mi. When I got down to the swivel housing I found these 'grooves' next to the thrust bearing housing. Is this normal? The swivel pin itself appeared OK, and these grooves actually appeared to be machined, not gouged. This is actually the second time that I have diassembled the swivels. I was getting a burning smell from both sides after the first disassembly/rebuild, and I wanted to make sure that I wasn't burning up a new seal or bearing. However, I cannot remember seeing these grooves. I have not disassembled the DS yet, so I do not know if this condition exists there also.

I believe that's normal. They are from the machining of the housing. Alan Stuart |

I posted the same question when I rebuilt mine. It looks similiar to yours:
I originally thought the outside of the CV axle made the "grooves" but if you look closely you can see lines from where it was machined out probably to allow enough clearance for the CV. |

Hey Brian how long did this take you to do and how difficult was it? I just wanted to know. |

The first time, about eight hours for both axles. The second time, about two hours per axle. It is not that difficult, just have your exploded views on paper and things like that. |
