Just curious, with a RRC and a snorkel exactly how deep can you go before you risk damaging something? If water is to the bottom of the doors should I stop or can I go further?

Make sure everything is waterproofed with electrical grease, and you can go as deep as you would like... until the water finally seeps into the electrics. FWIW I am about to enclose my ECU in a Rubbermaid container and will put the lid on for really deep/extended crossings. Then there is nothing to worry about.

The realy key is keeping the Distributor, ignition wires and coil dry enough to work.

Larry, how do you recommend keeping the dist, ignit wires, and coil dry? Any ancient secrets? :-)

FIGURE 2ft without a slash on entering., anything past that is potentially at risk of shorting out.

range rovers have shotty electronics and are just looking for a reason to stall. i'm having problems keeping mine running on dry land,

Hey Larry,
You've gotta send me some pics once you get that Rubbermaid box on...that's classic.

Paul,
I will do that. Probably will do that this weekend. I'll take some pics.

Jason, if you're anal about the distributor, there's an old trick to it. drill a small hole in the cap, about 1/16 in., in a location that is not close to the terminals. Glue in a vent line - it can be PVC or any other plastic, - route it to the higher location than the distributor, and cap with a small K&N filter. Then, run a bead of silicone around the bottom of the distributor cap, and let it set. The wires are fairly waterproof on their own, with the exception of the boots sliding off the dist. cap terminals. Again, silicone will take care of that, as well as of the locations where wires enter the boots (both dist.cap and spark plugs). Smear some oil - pardon, dielectric grease - on the inside of the spark plug boots.

The coil does not need any special waterproofing unless you plan on driving over seawater. The ignition amplifier's circuits are all low-voltage (except for the wire that goes to the coil, which has short ~300V pulses on it), so there should be no problems with short-term water immersion. I haven't tested it on the 3.9, so take it with the grain of salt - although I've had plenty of water all over the engine in the Disco and jeep.
