need to change my oil. dont feel like paying more for shipping than the actual cost of the filter. WHat other filters will work? I think I can recall some disscussion of certain filters not being compatable with the Rovers due to no anti drain back valve or something??? What filters are suggestable? O yeah its a 3.9 if that matters?

Kyle-I too use the FL-1A-cheap, every Wal-Mart has one. The AC-Delco PF-2 also fits well and rated highest in the much referenced too-much-time-on-the-hands internet oil filter study.

Seems as though suggesting Fram products will get you flamed pretty quickly though.

Peace,
Paul

Thats funny the FL-1A is the filter for my cousin's Exploder. Better watch out so that doesn't blow too. Hahaha. Hey you think FL-1A would fit a D2?? Thats what I would get if it could!!

I believe with those filters it is especially important to prime with some oil. I have heard this of any Rover oil filter.

Is this true?

I do it since I have heard it from numerous sources, but never confirmed.

yeah I am certain that with any filter when you put it on a Rover you must fill it with OIL due some kinda anti drain back. I dont really understand it very well but I know you have ot fill the filter with oil.

What about AIR filters? Anybody find a NAPA or Fram version... for the D1.
I have noticed the Land Rover not included in the reference books, but the "LADA" is in there. What ever that is?

Thanks Doug

So far, I have changed the oil on my rover around 20 times (many miles daily and religious adherence to oil change schedules). I have yet to have a problem with the oil pump losing its prime. If I were to have rebuilt the entire engine and were starting out with an empty sump, it is necessary to prime the pump, but under normal circumstances, this is not a concern.

It is however, a very good practice to fill the oil filter on any engine so that the engine is not oil-starved upon start-up as the pump must first fill the empty filter, before it can send any oil to the bearings where it is needed.

Mobil 1.

At first I thought I was just wasting $11 on a high end oil filter that just had a flashy brand name, but I read a bunch of reviews and dissections and it is actually top notch. If you use Mobil 1 oil (like i do) you might as well go ahead and get the matching filter.

My mechanic suggested the Fram X2 and that is what I use. Fram website has some good info like 70% more capacity, 7000 mile run time, but all I know is, I poured over a quart in the damn thing and it just kept taking it...cons - $11.99.

That's a mighty insightful comment perrone.

You may be right, despite lack of depth, but I'd surmise that cost of living is quite a bit higher here in Santa Barbara than down there.

When you go buy yours for $8.50 feel free to call yourself a winner.

I wasn't referring to the cost. You could have gotten it for $.50 and I'd still say you got ripped off.

As for me, I use the Purolator PureOne L30001. When I can't get those, I opt for the NAPA Gold/WIX in the same size. The Mobil 1 is a better filter than any of these but at $12 it's just a bit more than I care to spend.

Jonathan:
In an apparently very in-depth study published elsewhere on the internet, Fram filters ranked at the bottom of every category, hence Perrone's comment and mine.

The exceptionally heinous thing about the X2 is that it uses the exact same filtration as the cheaper Fram in a different case and box and they charge $12+ for it.

i use wix myself, but i don't see the fram x2 anywhere in that study, so i wouldn't be too quick to disparage it just because it's made by fram. and the toughguard actually got pretty good marks.

You're right. Even though the company has been proven to produce substandard equipment, including products that knowingly allow dirty oil to drain back into your clean oil, perpahps they do indeed change their entire philosophy for this one product.

Personally, I chose to use products from companies that make the effort to make quality products. I see you do the same by your use of WIX. It is possible that the x2 is a great filter, but I wouldn't spend the money to find out. Maybe someone else will.

there are many companies that make good and bad products. your ass will be sitting in one on your drive home. but your point is well-noted. i'll let someone else be the guinea pig for new, untested products from a manufacturer with a poor reputation. i'm staying with wix.

I seem to remember a thread regarding an upgrade to a dual-filter system, such as Amsoil which contains a SuperDuty filter plus a by-pass filter eliminating particles less than 1 micron.
Achieving a payback with the initial cost of the system would take longer with regular Dino oil users, however for Synthetic users, payback is much sooner.
Anyone out there have this set-up or have comments both + or -?

Now that WAS informative! The reason for my crack was because saying 'You got ripped off' told me absolutely nothing.

I didn't know Fram's were thought to suck in general. This is a new line and seems to be pretty advanced by the sound of their sales babble.

A little skeptical about that 'frankhunt' article. Takes many mechanical measurements, but doesn't actually test the function of the part, which is the most inportant unless the can explodes due to some mechanical deficiency. Surface area, pleats, diameter, length mean nothing when the molecular structure of the filter material varies, changing flow and filtration characteristics.

Not sold yet..but thanks for the information.

Mechanical measurements aside, any company that would use substandard drainback valves, and parts made of *cardboard* in an oil filter loses my business. Like I said, the x2 may well be a fine filter, and I wish you success with it, but I'm sticking to a company with a better track record.

Kevin, you are right about "good and bad" products. However, I don't think LR has made a bad product. They may have some parts that are not quite as robust as they should be, but they have never "cheaped out" on critical systems. Not to mention the disparity of complexity we are talking about here. A vehicle is a VERY complex thing, an oil filter has maybe 10 parts tops.

that's my point. the toughguard is not a bad product. in fact, it made the "recommended" list. it does have a part (cardboard) that is not quite as "robust" as it should be. "bad" is a relative term when describing anyone's products. many of us on this board think that the new disco, for various reasons, will pale when compared to the older ones. does this make it a "bad" product just because i won't buy it? not necessarily. nor is the toughguard that i'm also not going to buy. but, hey, if someone else likes it, bully for them. :-)

i've only been there once - needed to tow an old jeep from Ventura to San Diego, and the only local U-haul with a 5klb trailer was in Oxnard. I was impressed seeing Napa, Kragen, and PepBoys within 200 yards of each other on the main street :-)
