Hey all - I recently got some used tailight guards for my DII (very cheap) and there are some rust spots on them where the coating (plastic?) has come off. Has anyone repainted or recoated theirs? I've looked at them and it appears to me that they would have to be recoated somehow. Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated. I'm not sure if this is something I can do myself with materials I can order or if it's something I just need to take to someone (and if so, who?). I'm also thinking about some new tires. My current set are showing their mileage and I'm considering going ahead and replacing them. I'm going to be hitting the off-road trails here in Colorado this summer, so I'll want something good for off-road (BFG AT?). I also commute occasionally and don't want something too noisy. Any recommendations? Also, what's the largest size I can go with without causing any problems of any sort. All info. greatly appreciated. Thanks! Duane Bolin Parker, CO 1999 Kinversand DII |

Duane - I had the same problem with mine. Fortunately, since they were on the truck from the previous owner LR covered them under warranty. I had initially looked at repairing them before I realized the warranty was in effect. Best I could figure would be to take them to a powder coat outfit in your neighbourhood and have them bake off the coating. Then give them a couple coats of paint. It didn't seem worth the cost to have them re-powdercoated IMO. From what I hear, it is a b*tch getting that coating off. Jason |

The way you describe it as being a plastic coating makes it sound like they are those bearmach/dap ones that have the rubber coating or whatever. I've never seen any bearmach/dap stuff but perhapse that rubber coating from home depot that comes in a can for coating tool handles could be used to touch it up. I don' know, just an idea. For all your tire questions a quick search of the archives should get you all the info you need. |

I had the same problem with the guards on my '93 RRC when I bought it. I peeled off as much of the plastic coating as I could, sandblasted the rusty spots and used high-gloss black Tremclad paint (available at Cdn Tire). Matches up pretty well and after a couple of good coats can't really tell the difference between the remaining plastic and the painted bits. It all held up pretty well this winter except the areas where the stainless screws hold the things on and broke the paint. |
