The "Service Engine" (RED) light on my 96 Disco SE7 came on at 83K. According to the owners manual an AMBER light illuminates when the vehicle reaches approx 50K indicating I should take the truck to LR for a special emissions related service. What's the deal between the colors? What's the "special" service? Is this a indicator for an issue or an inspection? How can I reset? Thanks for your advise!

mine just came on at 119k, also on a 96 SE7. do you have stock tire size? orange is warning, red is critical. the special servie is checking the emissions and resetting the light. look in the tech section for a write up.

The trucks got stock 235/70/16 size tires. I just had an emissions test as part of my state inspection in January 2003, with no concerns detected. Just tried out "Race Trac" gas on Tuesday. Could this be related to the quality of the gas I put in? Wonder why it would critical vs. a warning? Still looking for advise. I'll also check the tech section for more info.

if it is the amber/orange light on the left, that means your truck is throwing a code. if it is the red light on the right, means emission reminder. follow the procedure in the tech section under the FAQ to reset.

Thanks for posting the picture. It's the red "Service Engine" light on the right that's on. Does the light have multiple functionalities or is it just an indication to check emissions? Is the light triggered by a problem, mileage, hours, or what causes it to illuminate? I plan to reset the sensor, but want to make sure I'm not ignoring some sort problem.

Unplug it under the passenger seat.

unplug what? you are just resetting it by sticking a paper clip in the tiny hole. you might be talking about a pre '96 D1 Blake.

Under the passenger seat? The tech section says "Remove the passenger side kick panel and locate the Emission Maintenance Reminder which is the red box". Are there multiple locations to reset the "Service Engine" sensor or does the location depend on the year and model?

94-95, reset under passenger seat
96-99 DI, reset in kick panel as tech section says.

comes on at certain mileages, though those seem to vary, to remind you to take into the dealership to "perform" emission services. usually check your O2 sensors, cats, etc. just reset it and forget it.

though, mine has been on for the past 25k miles because the frickin thing does not want to reset. unplugged and everything. and even weirder, light isn't on permanent, just when truck is moving. not rpm increase, actually rolling. keep meaning to just rip the bulb out, but the way i have my steering wheel set, don't even see the light most of the time. sorry, just ranting.

Thanks for the advise! I'll try resetting the "Service Engine" light and assume I'm not ignoring a problem.

robbie, did you use a metalic rod? a 3/32" punch will do the trick.

yep, even took the cover off, put every piece of metal between the two posts, even touched the posts together, unplugged the box, everything. just think it is some lucas crap going on with the damn light. it even blinks in time with other things electrical, such as blinkers or wipers. i sit there, light is off. rev the engine, light stays off. start rolling down a hill, light flickers, then comes on after reaching about 5mph. oh well.

Where do you reset the service engine light on a Disco II (99). I removed the side kick panel and I did not see any red box!I am assuming that applies on older models

you can't on a DII. that Service Engine light means that you are throwing a code and need to have it reset by an OBDII reader. completely different between DI's and DII's in that regards

Robbie,

The guy in the local autozone told me that if I reset it with the OBDII reader, next time I take to dealer, they will not be able to read past codes thrown by the computer? is this true?
