Anyone here use the flex neck mount for their GPS? I'm thinking of mounting a plate to the dash with a 6" flex neck to the 1" ball then the clamp and Garmin cradle for my SPIII...wondered if anyone has tried something similar?

Also, anyone have the Garmin Topo CD? How is it? worthwhile? Anyone looking to sell it? and/or 128mb Garmin memory stick?

I use a RAM mount with my 176C that is screwed into the dashboard of my D2.

Works well. I can send you pics off list if you like. E-mail me.

have my 176 mounted the same as Craig. was a little hesitant about drilling into the dash, but that went away quickly. :-)

I have all the normal RAM mount hardware for my motorcycle and love it. I was mostly interested in the flex neck stalk.

Rans-

I don't use the flex mount. I believe that it would be too flimsy to hold my 176C. For smaller units, it may be adequate. When on the trail, the RAM standard neck works wonderfully in holding the GPS unit in place.

The picture size limit on the BBS doesn't show the level of detail that I think does the RAM mount justice.

That being said, here are some pictures of my GPS setup.

Thanks Craig, great pics (except for the standalone one in the second row: object not found)

I take it the 176 has an attachment point in the back? I have to use a cradle with the SPIII and the mount plate is basically on the bottom, which would make things sit a little different. I think I will try the route you and Garrett are using first as I already have all the parts except the mount to screw into the dash. which reminds me, how long of a screw did you use? Drilled first? What is the dash material that is holding it tight?
Thanks

Rans- I fixed the broken link, thanks.

the kit that RAM offers for the 176C includes a clip that holds the unit.

I used 2" long screws and I drilled a very small pilot hole first, making sure not to go too deep, as I did not know what was resting under the plastic I was drilling into.

I placed an order for the dash mount setup. By the time I pieced together just the pieces I needed, it was only a little more expensive to get the whole kit, so I did. 2" screws it is...hopefully I can make it all work as nicely as you did. From the pics you appear to have it hardwired in, any tricks there?

No tricks, except you'll have to extend the power leads to the battery, which is what I did. As far as screw length, you may be able to get away with shorter, but those 2" screws were all I had that were black, but they are working nicely. On the D2, there is a layer of foam that you will have to drill through. I'm not sure what D1s have on the dash.

I loosened the binnacle and routed the included power cable down to the firewall and ran the cable through a rubber grommet in the firewall, then routed the cable around the engine compartment to the battery. That way I can keep the GPS unit on while I shut the truck off.

I used shorter screws on mine Randy. I attached directly over the air vent to the left of the radio as I assumed the screws would go into the air duct that way. Not sure whats under there but there has to be a plastic backer on the dash. I used like 1" drywall screws and it worked just perfectly with no pilot holes.

Of course, I have the normal RAM mount with no flex neck.

I have some 1 5/8 black drywall screws that I'll use. Split the difference between you guys!

I gave up on the flex-neck and stuck with the standard clamp mount. I also ordered a video camera mount that I can use in the truck or on my motorcycle.

Rans, where did you order the cam mount from? I've been looking for one as well.

I ordered it from GPSCity.com

http://www.gpscity.com/gps/brados/07142.1.2724048016993062439/rammounts.html?

They have just about the best prices, and certainly the most options, perhaps to the point of distraction. Allow at least an hour to peruse, even if you THINK you already know what you want! My whole distraction over the flexarm happened after I knew what I wanted. They probably own 2-3 hours of my life this past week!

The URL for the company that makes the RAM Mount is:

http://www.ram-mount.com/

Has great 360deg views of some mounts.

Sorry if this is off topic, but does anyone have the garmin e-map? I'm looking for just a basic map system with breadcrumb features and a good price.

Craig - Great mounting! You inspired me to do the same for my GPS V. The eyes are just getting to old to see it sitting in the center of the dash.
