I am looking into replacing my Disco II (99) for a used Range Rover. my intention is to buy one from year 97-00, but I do not know of the major changes that ocurred during these years. do you guys have any experience on this? I would like to stick with a 99 vehicle, but does it really matter since we are talking about a "land rover"?

thanks

Go to rangerovers.net. That should help you quite a lot.

go with 99 1/2 and up. 99 had both Bosch and Gems trucks. You can tell a Bosch truck without looking under the hood becuase they have dual exhausts. Gems trucks had a single exhaust.

Does this mean that the 95 - 98 models are not as good. I thought mechanically they are pretty much the same. I too am looking at a RR but my budget leaves me no choice but to shop for a 95 or 96 model. I might be able to get a 96 4.0 with 84k for 14,000 it is a one owner car from a used car dealer. Whaddaya think ??

think of the range rover as a high priced disco. yes it has better ammenities and is a lot nicer overall. The problem with the 4.0 is its lack of power overall. The 4.6 isn't much better, but does make a overall improvement. The thing with the 99 and newer is the electronics are not Lucas they are Bosch which makes for a better system with less gremlins in them. Also a side note 15k service intervals is about half the cost at the dealer due to work involved. Also not sure but make sure you get one with a serpentine belt not sure when they switched. I have a 90 RR and a 97 disco, plan to get a D90 this year to round out my collection. So I have the 4.0 and the 3.9 good motors I feel just damn slow. Not sure on cost check KBB and see. I will say this that I have seen them a little cheaper, but that one might be cherry.

Thanks for the advice. I guess the price might seem a bit high. I saw one the other day a 97 4.0 for 10,000 . What a POS ! Suspension did not work as well as noisy cat converters. You are talking about 2 - 3 grand in repairs right there. I really dont need the speed as I have a 2001 VW GTI for that purpose.

I think you should not buy it. If your budget only allows for the purchase price of an 84k 96 4.0, you will be bankrupt very soon. Unless you really know what to look for as far as problem areas are concerned, that 14k range rover will be a 22k range rover in no time. They are exceptionally costly to own. I just sold a 96 4.0, it had 34k miles when I bought it and 52k when I sold it. During that period, while under warranty (which is the only way to buy one) I have over $6000 in various ROs. Suspension, seals, valves, a slew of electronic issues, and a lot more. They are great vehicles to drive, but that Rover was by far the most needy, more so than my 1990 Range, and that thing spawns a new issue weekly. In short, if your budget is 14k, then you need to find one thats around 9k and open a seperate rover repair account with the balance.

Thanks I figured as much which is probably why I should make my first Landrover a Disco or an older RR. I guess I am a scared LR buyer. I wonder if there are any lucky owners of the 4.0 or 4.6 Rovers that spent no money over a years time on any service/maintenance other than oil changes ??

I have a 98 disco i bought one year ago. when we bought it had 25k on it, and now I have 35k. There have not been any problems at all (knock on wood)- the previous owner said he too had no problems at all. Just 3 oil changes and premium gas!

Finally a feel good story on Rover owners maintenance. I like Gils idea on having some reserve money on hand for service/maintenance because I think Dans' experience is few and far between. Anyone else with low maintenance pls dont hesistate to share your joy especially RR owners as I am under the impression that the Disco is a little more on the reliable side !

Bob, I also have a 97 disco that I have never had any issues with.. until today and its very minor. No leaks, no gremlins, nothing in 69,000 miles. Its been one of the most reliable vehicles Ive owned. It is also very different from a Range Rover. Ive heard a few disco horror stories, but proportionaly there are many more 95-98 range rover horror stories.
