Just shipped 40 Defender 110's for our troops in Northern Iraq. I guess the terrain in Northern Iraq is mountainous therefore Land Rovers IMO.

The Australian special forces are also using a modified LR 6x6 which is supposed to be great in the desert.

some of the US army airborne divisions have been using defenders since like '96. they take up less space and can transport seven fully equipped troops. When they got em to fort benning GA, the soldiers there called them "gun jeeps"...Ugh

Somebody needs to slap a Discoweb sticker on them!

I slapped a couple of Discoweb stickers on my buddie's 1973 Pontiac Grand Prix. I think they gave him an extra 6 inches of lift. Hell, if we did it to those Defenders, they might get a force field or quad damage powerup or something! :-)

Cheers,

Paul,

The when I was at 3/75th from 93-96 the D110, (RSOV), was already there. I do not know when RSOV’s got to Ranger Battalion, it was before 93. RSOV's would be used by a group known as “bikes and jeeps”, (BJ's) which would follow an initial assault. You are right about the space. The narrow vehicle allows for room on the sides for fully equipped airborne troops who had to get out before the BJ’s at a slightly different altitude.

Stacy, you in the Training Brigade or the 3rd Bn?

My bro was in 3rd from '98-2001. Or something like that. He loved it, and just happened to get out a few months before Sept. 11th. All his friends were sending him photos and emails from the front. They are a little more busy than that now - I'm proud to know a few of the guys that are over there right now with the Rangers.

Check out the photos...

I think they use the 200 or 300tdi (It was the 200 during development phase.) And my brother, at the time of these photos was the gunner, then became a driver. He also had a bike for a while before getting out.

R.B.,

I have spoken with your brother, Toph, on cruizers.com. We were in the same stinking platoon, and his Sgt. Johansson was my senior PFC. It is funny place where rank does not matter some times, and time in Battalion does. Having a degree and enlisting does you NO favors. I am sure Toph, has told a tale or two about Johansson. At the time 2nd PL was a jump clear team, (JCT). I had my RSOV license but hardly ever got to drive around. I had to do my job on foot. There is nothing like clearing 5000 to 10,000 ft of runway. :-)LOL.

Back in those days, Battalion was making mods as the mission dictated and we learned from trial and error.

I just realized that! I saw your name and realized that you had probably at least met up with him on the cruiser site! That is cool.

I am trying to remember, I think I do remember him saying something about Johansson. Is he the "big" guy with a fouler than usual mouth?

So do you know John Baker and Rensy (sp?) Those guys are role models for a boy to grow up with. True Warriors.
They were both in my bro's wedding and I got to hang out with them and others in Georgia and Portland.

R.B.,

Johansson is a tall, running, mouldoon, (his own words). Most swore more than usual. :-) LOL.

Baker sounds familiar but I can not put a face to the name. I am getting old.

Many american SPEC units use LR's and Gwagens, mainly because the Humvee doesn't fit into a Chinook. It is better to drive a vehicle off of an aircraft than to punt it or LAPSE it. and when the choice is driving or carrying on your back, delivery by chinook is just fine.
While I am on this subject, there are some great shots on militaryphotos.com (net)?
