What are the pitfalls, DOT regulations, etc...

Just a burning desire to get my hands on a Defender Pickup with a TDI!!!

Short answer: you can't.

To do this legally, you would have to bring in either a '93 D110; or a '94, '95, or '97 D90, and would have to convert it to be identical to a US-spec model, meaning changing out all of the lights, the glass, the engine, emmissions, etc. THEN, you'd have to pay a hefty fee to have the importer certify that it is in compliance w/ DOT (which would cover the EPA regs).... If I remember correctly, that's an $8000 fee, w/o counting any work or parts to do it.

In the end, it's cheaper to buy one of the US ones.

Some other FYI:

You can import anything 25-years old or older.

You can import parts, put 'em together, and have a kit car - depending on your state.

Hope that helps....

I have beeb researcehing..I thought about the kit car approch but what I read shot that Idea down.. it would be a expensive head ache to get one buyt if you have alotta money it could be done..get you a D 90 here and just get a TDI conversion..EAST COAST ROVERS...although I do no think that there is any service for Land Rovers and amking them meet EPA and DOT standards althgouh on the British Pacific message bopard there was news about the d-90 coming back over ...no not some unibody indepent supension bullshit the one like we all love but with Air Bags it does cost 8large to get ceritifed buy the importer but that dont include parts and all to get in acceptable by our standards..My idea would be to get to Mexico and get your d-90 shipped to mexico and 4 wheel it across the border thats my plan when i get old and rich..if cartels can bring lots of bad drugs I can bring a rover....as for now I am in college and by the time I am done and all Rover will prolly be a thing of the past like International and the Scouts...I see rover going the way of the Toyota Land Cruiser..as far as bringing the d-90 over here good luck..I am sure it could be done it would take time and money..

it would be cheaper and much easier to get a Defender over here and have it converted by some place like East COast Rover
