I don't understand how a Disos 4 wheel drive system is so good(D1). I was trying to compare it to my father's Jeep Wrangler. Let me see if I can get this right. When a Wangler is in 4 wheel high, and a Disco has the center diff locked they basically have the same traction right? Because a Wrangler in high can still spin 2 diagonal wheels the same as a Disco. So my question is what makes a Discovery's 4 wheel drive system that great?

Couple of things....

In snow, I don't like 4wd locked; the Disco is still a 4wd when unlocked, whereas the Wrangler isn't... and, the weight of the Disco is an advantage in snow.

Once locked, in normal off-road conditions, you're right, they're similar (again, except where the weight helps). But, the Wrangler can't take the abuse that the Disco can over time, or haul as much along with ya.

And Wranglers are common.... I like not seeing 20 of the same vehicle every morning on the way to work....

Leslie, I don't know where you live but I do see 20 Discos on my way to work! (They're all cleaner than mine too... go figure)

I used to see one a blue moon, until i got to college in auburn. Its like rover heaven. Even girls drive decked out d90's. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
mmmmm d90's and girls. Thats a combination.

i stopped by LR dealer this morning to get a set of brake pads - so all together, i must have seen about 100 rovers of all kinds on my way to work.

Leslie, the weight of the disco helps it to sink in snow like a rock. If the snow is less than 2 ft deep, it helps it to make ruts and stay put in off-camber places. if snow is deeper than 2 feet...



unfortunately, I have many more like this...
it doesn't say anything about whether it is better or worse in snow than a Wrangler. FWIW, a stock YJ is worthless in anything deeper than 4" of snow, while Disco's still okay. Having a differentiated 4WD helps immensely in snow when you have to negotiate tight turns and side-slopes.

The Disco has more wheelbase and that helps in climbing snowy hills. Being heavier helps if there's hard surface underneath. Once the hills get steep, and gravity takes over or once the snow gets deep, the disco gets stuck. Just like Peter says. I don't wheel our disco much, because it's our "nice" car for now and I wheel the TJ more because its better equipped but the Disco did impress me in the snow until I ran into those already mentioned limitations. I also wheel with other Discos and D90s so I compare all the time.
The same traits show all the time. When the terrain benefits heavier vehicles, the Rovers seem unstoppable. When it benefits lighter vehicles, the Jeeps kick ass. Luckily we get a bit of both, so we keep the arguments going. :-)

the wheel base on a wrangler is 97" as opposed to the disco's 100" The big differance that i see is that both in stock form, is that the disco has more clearance underneath, no low gas tank
no low track arms
and the bumpers are much higher than on the jeep!
Plus the stock disco has more articulation,
my wife has a 98 wrangler
and i took it out where the disco had been several times without a scrape, well the wrangler came out with some dented factory skid plates, and a damaged front bumper!
just my thoughts and observations

The wheelbase of a stock TJ is 92.3". So the difference is noticeable. My TJ came with 30" tires (29" just like the 235s on the Disco) but the bumpers are much higher than on stock Disco. The tank on the TJs sits low but the overhang is much less. So I think things equal out there. If you don't disconnect the front sway bar on the TJ, it will probably flex a little less than a Disco. But it also sways less on the road. That's because its front sway bar is stiffer. Because of that, when connected, the sway bar links don't last very long off-road. That's why they make quick disconnects. But then again, if you disconnect front swaybar on the Disco, it will probably outflex a disconnected TJ. Took the Disco to where my stock TJ went several times unscathed. The disco went home with some damage to the bumper and throughout the trip I was always worried about the doors and door sills. Just my thoughts and observations. It's all relative.

Oh and H1 should be better in snow than H2.

Dan...

Studies have shown that the H2 far surpasses the H1 in areas such as comfort, noise reduction, interior options, and affordability, thus making it the superior off road vehicle to anything out there.

Gheez...I though everyone knew that!

So because the H2 is more comfortable, makes less noise, has more interior options, and is cheaper, it is a better off-road machine than a H1, disco and a jeep??? Wow, I bet a hyundai XG350 (fully loaded of course)would really kick ass off road!

Where can I see these studies?

Just giving you a hard time man. I respect your opinion. H2s are sweet.

You're right it's 93.4. It was a typo - I was off on the keyboard by that one key. I guess I should re-read my messages more often. Either way a noticeable difference. But my main point was that it's all relative.

Dang, spend the weekend busy, and come back to this.... :-)

Traveltoad, et al, (I still want your 1150GS, BTW) : Not around here, I know most of the Rovers I see.... I don't live "in the city", the nearest dealers are 2 hours away (Knoxville or Asheville), so, people that have Discos in this area really wanted 'em and went looking for them. But, that's slowly changing, there are more and more D1s driven by soccer-moms around here now that there were two years ago.

Peter, good point; but around here, snow never makes it over 2-feet deep, so, the Disco's still better.... :-)

Forget H1, H2, Jeep and Rover and just go for the Unimog!! hahaha I still love my D2 though and I have kicked my friend's Jeep's ass off-road many times. But then again it also has to do with the driver, I have taken my cousin's 98 exploder off-road and actually I was impressed it could take a beating but I drove it well.
