I went to LR Paramus about 2 months ago (early Feb) to show them my 99D1 for some rust spots on the rear door pillars and some on the rear floor. The Body Shop manager, Brian Scarnechia, took some pictures of the rust spots and apparently, he will send them to LRNA for approval. Well, it's April and still haven't heard from them. I call them every other week to remind them (squeeky wheel gets the oil theory), but I'm getting all kinds of excuses.

The question is, do I go to another dealer or do I keep pestering these people. I bought mine from LR Parsippany back in 99 but Paramus is only 3 miles from me. I know I have roughly 2 more years before the warranty expires on me but I just want to know if this is normally a long-ass process.

Thanks!
Glenn

Hey Glenn,

I had the same problem (rust on the rear door dog legs). I heard back after 2 weeks and my truck was fixed a week later so from my experience, it was pretty quick.

You know something, it might sound wierd, but you should go to the dealer you bought it from. Why? Well in my experience there is a dealer close to me as well but they never ever pay attention to me but the dealer I bought my D2 from which is farther away takes care of me all the time and quickly and knows my name. Which isn't a good thing because that means my truck is a piece of shit. LOL But really some dealers can be assholes if you didn't buy from them.

Glenn,

While I have not had any personal experience with LR Paramus, I have heard that customer service at LR Parsippany/LR Woodbridge (owned by the same group) is wonderful.

I've been using LR Parsippany for scheduled maintenance (it's included on '03 Discos) and am pleased with them. Give them a call and see what they say.

Eugene,

You're exactly right, LR Paramus has that "snotty" atmosphere as opposed to the more relaxed atmosphere in Parsippany. Nick, the parts manager is cool and also that girl that used to be in the counter, I can't remember her name. I bought my 99D1 from them (Paul Miller Auto Group) and love their shop, but unfortunately, it's about 25 miles from me as opposed to 3 miles for Paramus. But as Pete pointed out, sometimes, its worth those 25 miles of driving to deal with good people. Oh and they have a cool newsletter too!

Glenn
One plus that LR Paramus have over other dealerships is that it's right next to Hooters

Glenn,

I've been to the Hooters next to LR Paramus! :-)

LR Princeton is the closest dealer to me. When my side mirror cracked this past winter, I called two nearby dealers to see if they could schedule me in that weekend. Left a voicemail for LR Princeton and never got a call back. In contrast, called LR Parsippany and immediately got a service advisor. She scheduled me for an appointment the very next day.

I showed up before the dealer opened the next morning and the service advisor let me in and wrote up my work order. He didn't complain and did everything with a smile. We talked about hiking in Maine and the G4 Challenge Freelander that was sitting in the showroom area. LR Parsippany won me over based on that experience (and it's almost an hour from my house!)

-Eugene

PS/ One neat thing that LR Parsippany does (I'm not sure if other LR dealers do the same) are the photo albums of off-roading trips in the waiting area. I must have browsed through six or seven binders worth!

I just remembered the name of the girl on the counter, I think it's Marlene, but I think she got promoted now as someone else is there now. It's been awhile since I've been there, but I used to join them for the dealer fun days all the time. I think you can see my truck in one of those albums. Jim Pappas (I think he owns the company that makes the Southdown diff guards) works there too. Really cool dealership with cool people!

You guys are rather lucky to have a choice of dealers to go to. In Calgary, we have one dealer, and the next closest is Edmonton over 3 hours north. I am kind of lucky that the dealer here is not too bad when it comes to customer service.

Chris

P.S. LR Calgary keeps a few photo albums of off-road adventures.

My 2 cents worth: You should go to the dealer with the best service and reputation. Out here in LA I drive 30 miles rather than go to the dealer only 3 miles from my house because of their overpricing of parts. I've also found a growing number of independent shops that can service my 96 D1, now thats it getting a little older.

Chris,

The LR Edmonton dealership has a few off-road albums too. There's a photo of a D110 that I've been trying to figure out who it belongs to as I've never seen it. There's also a guy restoring a D110 pickup right now that he'll be selling as soon as he's done. It's pretty nice. He just finished the body panels and is sort of working on interior. I think it was an ex-military one that he's fixing up. He also has two D90s. One he uses for his safari company and the other he uses as a parts bin. There's also an Australian fellow just north of Edmonton that specializes in restoring old Series trucks. He's got about 10 of them on his farm that he's working on.

I've been to the Calgary dealership. It's quite nice. A little flashier than our Edmonton one but this one is currently under renovations.

Glenn - I took my 97 to my local dealer here in San Diego, the vehicle was purchased new in NJ. My local dealer had their preferred body shop provide an estimate with photos that were then sent to LRNA by my dealer. less than a week later, it was approved for repair and was repaired within 2 weeks.

Find a dealer who will give you the proper customer service!

Todd,

FWIW - after seeing your old post on this topic, I took my '96 with bubbling rust under/around alpine windows to the dealer. Guess what, the answer was SOL. The warranty expired last August. However, my truck WAS treated for rust in '98, and the dealership (same as yours) sent it to the shop that they suggested me to go to this time. As the word of mouth goes, they do an excellent paint job, so you could never tell it was fogged over, but are really shitty at rustproofing and preparing the area for paint.

So it's all a matter of time. Who did your rust work?

Hey Glenn,

I'll pick you up at your house, take you to drop off your pig at Parsippany, then take you to Hooters in Paramus so you can buy me lunch! Deal??? LOL Do you remember any of the girls names there??? LOL Meanwhile, call LRNA and let them know about the Paramus dealer. Act like an asshole = get great service... Act like a nice guy = get screwed! Good Luck and let me know what you wanna do! LOL Weeeeeeeeeeeeeedoggie!!!

C. Fisher (Netter),

Don't know if you knew, but Rick went to Airdrie Pontiac and Carl is the new Service Manager in Calgary.

Pretty good guy, he took 50% off my bill this week after discussing the repeat-business aspect of my problem. (Intermittent fuel pump issues)

Wanna come with us to Moab on the May long week? (only 17 hours 1 way)

Cheers,

Shawn

Shawn

I knew Rick was gone, I just did not know where. I just had service done for the last three days and yikes I am glad I still had warranty. It is funny that when you think warranty, you think everything is covered, but I forget to think about the things that not covered. The next time I need something, I will have to remind myself to head up there and bug Rick to give me the same kind of deal! As for Moab, I will have to pass. Sorry man.

Alan
I seen a few guys here with their restoration projects. One that I saw was 1950 series one was done very nicely, even had a nice oil leak underneath. I have seen three D110 here in Cowtown (2 white NAS @ 1 red RHD).
