So I recently went throught the brake ciruit relay fiasco including inventive rear light/defroster wiring to bypass the problem. After I replaced the switch (AMR 2010) I noticed something odd. Just before the switch failure, my brakes went into a serious decline in performance. They were quite mushy despite my thorough bleeding and investigative work on other fronts. After the new switch they seem to be back to their old selves. I still can't stop on a dime, but then again my D1 never could. However, A LOT of the mushyness is gone. Am I imagining this? The harness that plugs into the brake switch has four wires and I'm positive not all of those are for the shiftlock. Is one activating the booster? What gives?

The other two are involved with the ABS activation. It is unlikely that the failure of your switch is related as the switch failure mode is due to excessive current flowing through Lucas-inspired contacts for the brake lights and there is little to no such damage to the other contacts from the switches I have seen. But, if it works OK now, be happy!

is it possible that if this switch isn't working properly then your brakes lights can go out? I can get out of gear, but I'm wondering if the wire pertaining to the brake lights on the switch is bad, but it's still enough there to make it work and let me get out of gear. is this possible?

No. If you can get it into gear, the circuit is being made sufficiently and should light the brake lights. I'd begin looking for a broken wire or bad ground.
