Has anyone seen g-wagens out on the road. I have seen many new ones, but never older ones. The older ones come with outrageous price tags. I have read that they can go "head to head" with Rovers. Does anybody have any first hand knowledge of the g?

No first hand experience...but some are traded very quickly for RR
Gwagen is MB version of a Defender...it doesn't work in the price range they have had to put it

I talked to a guy today in Winchester, VA who had 3 Unimogs sitting out side his shop. He tryed to tell me he paid 8000.00 each for them. One was fixed up pretty nice, he said that was his daily driver..

There's a bad-ass g here in C'ville that I see every time I go into town. It's so clean it's embarrassing, chrome all over it too. But, look inside and what do you see...3 little switches right at the top of the center console....Lockers. I'll get some pics next time...

Gelaendewagens are awsome...I love my Rovers, but I wouldn't mind having a G too. For many years the only company that brought them in was Europa International, and they sold in the 130K range before MB USA started bringing them in. There are a few people (Camille) who have imported them in themselves. But the importation and federalization takes a long time, and can be fairly costly. They are awsome and rare, so that is what keeps the price up. As far as the lockers go, they come standard on all of them except for the early G500's in Europe. These only had front and rear lockers, and the center diff was left open. As far as stockers go, there are only a few vehicles in its league.

I have seen many european G320's on ebay but they seem to be really stripped down. (which i don't mind)They also are very expensive even for early 80's models. Why wouldn't people get a late model defender?

I love my G's. They're all in the '92-'94 range, but look and feel like a new one, without the 18" butt ugly useless wheels. I love the fact they're built like brick johnnyhouses. I love the fact that they just don't depreciate, no matter how badly you beat the hell out of 'em. It's just like you guys who have the Rover obsessions... Except it's with G's.. Too bad there's not much of an off-roading G community out here.

Mine's pretty much stock, not too many mods (yet), including:
* 6 Hella FF100's
* Hella Matador (100Watt bulb i put in :-) )
* ARB full-length Roof Rack
* Cobra CB radio & some big antenna I picked up at a truck stop.
* 33x10.50x15 BFG A/T (yep they fit without ANY lift :-) )

I have a few things coming slowly but surely too.
* custom sliders
* 3" lift

Even further off in the distance are
* ARB bull bar
* Winch
* GPS

I'm gonna have to get an updated pic of it out on the web, but if I dont have time to do that soon, anyone who's going to the Uwharrie Safari will see me & my G there!

Cheers,
*Camille

Wow! How many g's do you have? I love the outside "brick johnnyhouse" look and feel. However the ugly plaid interior just doesn't cut it. But who cares if its' used as an off road beast?

I don't have an ugly plaid interior!! It's Black Leather FYI... Currently there are 4 G's living at my house. A 92 300GE which is mine, 2 93 500GE's which are my dad's, and a 94 350GD *turbodiesel* which is just sitting around right now.

Well, actually I've been driving it lately, because mine's in the shop (rotors, brakes, and master cylinder all had to be replaced uuuugh!)... I don't think youd like the color.. Nobody seems to like that aquamarine/teal color.

Yes, but once painted, it's never the same, unless its a rustball & really needs a paintjob.

Sorry about the plaid interior comment, I just saw that most on ebay had those seats. So it sounds like your g's are similar to current ones. Do you have any 2 doors? I saw a 2000 2 door with 300 hp in some off road mag

No, mine are all the LWB 5 Door. Only the euro models have the option for cloth interior. Those are more of the workhorse ones, without many extra options. There are three main types of G's out there right now, the 460's which were from like 79 'till 90, then the 461's, which replaced the 460 in 91, but it is a workhorse type. At the same time the 463 came out, which is still currently in production, as are the 461's, but the 463's are the only ones you will see in the US. They are more on the luxury side.

So in short, yes my G's are very similar to the new ones. What people don't understand is that these vehicles have been in production for 25 years now, and are still basically the same vehicle, and still rock solid.

I had a 81 before i got my 92, and it was an excellent vehicle. With more than 200k miles on the clock, it was still a very reliable truck, and was my daily driver for a year & a half.

Have you had any problems with any of your G's? Have you ever had any rovers? I drove a 2002 G and it sort of feels like my disco from the drivers seat.

I know a guy in Portland who drives a Unimog daily, it's his work truck. He does that heated plumbing in floors or something like that. Anyway, it's even more sparse than a Series truck, and not as large as you might think. But has tons of clearance, lots of load space, and gearing to make a Swiss watch maker proud.

I have also seen several nice G wagons from late '80's early '90's on eBay.

I haven't had any serious problems with my G's at all. I have not owned any rovers, although I have driven quite a few, including my mom's 2000 Trek edition Disco 2, and one of my best friend's 98 Disco 1 LE. I personally think that the disco & G are both really capable vehicles, as stockers, but the G just kinda beats it in the regard that it comes stock w/3 locking diffs.

The other day on I5 in LA I drove near what looked like an early/mid '80s G. It made me sad. It needed rescuing. The owner had put on those shiny rims with wide street tires and spacers so they stuck out the body (no lift of course). It looked like the guy had just traded up from a civic.

Then of course he had the big mud flaps, I guess to make his stupid tires legal.

I like the little 2 door rear soft top swb G's. I think that they are G280's.. I would love to have one. The 5 doors are nice too but, I really like the smaller ones.

I love G's. I hate to admit it, but I was begging my mom to get me one instead of my Disco. I have ridden in all of Camille's, and have not found a substitute for the feeling you get when you're in one. But (unfortunately) I think I have been branded a Rover man, cause that was my first car.

Take care,
Alex

PS: The 98 Disco 1 LE Camille was talking about is mine :-)

So while the G has 3 lockers, what about that 112" wheelbase?

If I see one more new G on the road with bigger rims than stock, I am going to puke. The 18's are plenty big and anything bigger just kill off road ability

Mark P-

LWB 5 door Gelaendewagens are 112" WB (kind of like D110)

SWB 2 and 3 door G-wagens are 94.5" WB
